Full Review

The Honeywell RTH8500D is a 7 day programmable thermostat that has been awarded an Energy Star certificate. Energy Star certificates are given to products that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and that help promote energy efficiency. The US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy assess products for the Energy Star program.

Honeywell's thermostat is easy to install to houses with standardized wiring. It can be installed on single stage or multi stage heating or cooling systems. It can be made to regulate independent heating and cooling systems or combined heaters and coolers. It can even be installed to regulate a gas fire place. A few people, however, have complained on Amazon and other review sites that the Honeywell RTH8500D was not as easy to install as the makers claim. The manufacturers have anticipated these problems and have a team of technicians ready to give detailed installation solutions. It is worth persevering with self-installation because it could cost over $500 to get someone in to do it for you.

Once the thermostat is installed then it is very easy to program. It has a menu driven touchscreen system that is easy to understand. You can program the temperature for your house for every day of the week, and within each day you can program 4 different periods of heating. This allows you to turn the heating down during the night, have the heating come on before you get up and go off while you are at work and then turn on just before you return from work.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has calculated that the average household spends $2,200 a year on heating and cooling their house. The Honeywell RTH8500D 7 day Touchscreen Universal Programmable Thermostat can save up to 33% of those bills by properly regulating the temperature in your house. That's a saving of over $700!

Part of the reason for this huge saving is due to the accuracy of the thermostat. It is precise within 1 degrees Fahrenheit. This means you no longer have to have your house too cold in the summer and too hot in the winter. The thermostat can also change between cooling and heating systems to make sure the desired room temperature is maintained.

Further useful functions of the Honeywell RTH8500D thermostat is a day light saving function that automatically adjusts the clock to fit the clocks moving back in the winter and forward in the summer. And there is a holiday mode that allows you to keep your house safe from sudden frosts while you are away on holiday.

In 2008 Energy Star certified products helped to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43 metric tons. That is a considerable achievement. One of the key ways this was achieved was by such items as the Honeywell RTH8500D that helped Americans rein in their excessive use of energy for heating and cooling their houses.

In Closing

For those people keen to save on their energy bills and reduce greenhouse emissions this is a must-by product.
