Hong Kong

By | Apr 17, 2011 | 1 Comments | Rating: 1

Hong Kong is a melting pot for both Eastern and Western cultures, setting a high standard for tourism in Southeast Asia. At its heart is Victoria Harbour, dividing the territory into Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, and the New Territories that link Hong Kong to main land China. Hong Kong is currently pushing to promote a "greener" awareness with regard to its burgeoning urban environment, which takes up about sixty percent of the territory.

Hong Kong is a major stopover for most Asian destinations with its magnificent harbor and bustling city center. Formerly comprised of fishing villages before being ceded to Britain under the 1842 Treaty of Nanking, Hong Kong today enjoys autonomy, that is, it observes a capitalist system, an independent judiciary and set of laws, as well as freedom of speech and the right to trade freely with other countries.

Transportation in Hong Kong

Arriving in Hong Kong is a breeze, since it is being served by over eighty major airlines. The Hong Kong International Airport, open 24/7, is considered one of the best airports in the world. The Mass Transit Railway (MRT) Airport Express travels to and from Hong Kong Island, taking about 24 minutes via high-speed rail.

Also readily available at the Hong Kong International Airport are taxis, buses, and coach and limousine charters. Around Hong Kong, the MTR rail system is an efficient and quick way to travel, consisting of ten lines and a Light Rail system between Yuen Long and Tuen Mun in the New Territories.

Planning your itinerary

Proceed to The Peak Tower for a gorgeous panoramic view of Hong Kong. The Peak Tram is the best way to arrive at the top, which also has its very own Madame Tussauds Museum, open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Another stunning view from the top can be seen from the Giant Buddha, Po Lin Monastery and the Wisdom Path.

Kids are sure to have a blast in Hong Kong Disneyland, which opens daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. To maximize your stay at this kids' haven, you can choose to stay over at the two Disney-themed hotels within the area. Hong Kong Disneyland offers entertaining rides such as Space Mountain and Disneyland Railroad.

Walk along the Tsim Sha Tsui Promedade and check out the Avenue of the Stars. End your day or week at the Victoria Harbour, which features the spectacular Symphony of Lights from over forty of Hong Kong's stunning skyscrapers.

Shopping and dining

Hong Kong is a shopaholic's paradise with its posh shopping centers and quirky street markets. Observe your right to bargain at Stanley Market, Temple Street Night Market, Jade Market and the Ladies' Market. If you have a little cash to spare, check out the many large malls and department stores in Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

After an adventure-filled day, reward yourself with a hearty dim sum meal to experience the ultimate in Hong Kong dining. Help yourself to tasty Chinese snacks served in warm bamboo baskets and ceramic hot pots. Wash down servings of dumplings, steamed buns, and pan-fried seafood with a comforting cup of Chinese tea.
