A trailer dolly is a towing device that is connected to a trailer truck or a bigger vehicle which can carry a semi-trailer, additional cargo, or a smaller vehicle.

There are many types of dollies. For the most commonly used type that is readily available for the general public, this article speaks on how to hook up a trailer dolly to a truck. This is especially essential when you can only spend for a truck rental, a dolly, and you already have someone to drive the truck. Hiring someone else from a company to do the job for you may just increase your expenses. If you're confident enough, do it on your own. Let us now take a look at just how to hook up dolly to a truck. This is essential when using car trailer dollies.

First of all, remember to review the trailer dolly manual to ensure you are doing the correct procedure.

Then, the locking device must be totally open. Place the eye hook of the dolly, or the coupler as it is also known, over the two inch hitch ball of the rental truck. The tow dolly coupler must be totally rested on the hitch ball. After that, you can lock the coupler. With regards on how to properly lock the tow dolly coupler on the hitch ball, take note on the following tips:

  1. For a tow dolly with a lever-type coupler---put the lever in the down position and insert the locking pin.
  2. For a tow dolly with a hand wheel-type coupler--- tighten the hand wheel first then pull up the tow dolly coupler to make sure that it is totally secure.

Insert the tow dolly's electrical plug into the receptacle of the truck's electrical box. Finally crisscross the chains and cables from the dolly. To do this, pass through the eye hooks of the truck and attach the hook to the chain. Slack in the chains is fine so the truck can freely mover during turns despite the extension for the semi-trailer.
