Hosta Blue Mouse Ears is rated the #2 miniature Hosta for 2010 by the American Hosta Society. I've got to admit this is my favorite mini Hosta. This is a sport of Hosta Blue Cadet.

This plant is for shade only and should be protected from the sun. If planted in direct sunlight the leaves would burn and if it didn't kill the plant it would make it weak and unattractive.

Blue Mouse Ears forms a neat and tight mound and has an upright habit and it forms a clump that is 8 inches high by 12 inches wide. Blue Mouse Ears is slug resistant. This is a tidy looking plant which does equally well in formal or casual gardens. When planting this Hosta consider using a companion plant with contrasting colors to complement each other.

The soft velvety looking leaves are 3 inches long by 2 inches wide and they cup upwards. The leaves are rounded which combined with the velvety appearance gives the impression of mouse ears. The leaves are a solid blue green color and although this plant has somewhat apparent veining the leaves are mostly flat. The thick leaves are slug resistant.

The pale lavender bell-shaped flowers bloom in the summer and are on 6 inch flower spikes. The seeds of Hosta Blue Mouse Ears are sterile and propagation has to be done by division only. Hosta plants are not known for their flowers and this variety is no different in that respect.

This is a tough and beautiful mini. Hosta Blue Mouse Ears is an eye catching perennial shade plant with wonderful soft blue leaves. It is my personal favorite and if I could only have one miniature Hosta this one would be it.
