Hosta Lemon Lime

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Hosta Lemon Lime is ranked #8 on the list of best miniature Hostas of 2010 according to the American Hosta Society. This plant has a great and unique form. I think of it as the shaggy dog of the Hosta world…maybe a dust mop. Lemon Lime is a Hybrid of Hosta nakaiana and is the parent plant of Hosta Twist of Lime which is ranked the 10th best mini Hosta. It was also the pod parent of Hosta Shiny Penny which was the parent of Cracker Crumbs the 6th best miniature Hosta for 2010 so this plant has quite the pedigree.

Lemon Lime is a fast growing Hosta that will reach 5 inches high and 12 inches wide. The leaves of this plant are 3 inches long by 1 inch wide.

The leaf coloration is solid chartreuse which fades to a light green as the leaves age. Lemon Lime…get it? Now my favorite aspect of this plant is the leaf form. The leaf edges are quite wavy and the ends of the leaves arch down. The strong veining in the leaves lead the eyes to follow the leaf as it arches down which gives it that shaggy impression.

This plant is sun resistant so those of us who have sunny gardens can get this mini Hosta without trying to find another piece of shade so we can grow more Hostas.

The flowers of Hosta Lemon Lime are pale lavender and the bloom stalks are 13 inches high. The flowers bloom from mid June to early July which is pretty standard bloom time. The seeds are sterile but who cares because this plant can be easily divided.

This is a beautiful plant that will work well in any shade garden.
