Hosta Lunar Orbit

By | Jul 28, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

General Information
Hosta Lunar Orbit is a large variegated Hosta. This is a sport of Hosta August Moon. This variety forms a mound of bright foliage. Lunar Orbit is a fast growing perennial which should be grown in the shade. Its thick leaves give it some protection from slugs. This shade loving perennial is not slug resistant.

Plant and Leaf Size
Lunar Orbit forms a clump that is 18 inches high by 20 inches wide. It is not the largest of the large Hosta varieties but it does form a nice sized clump quickly. The leaves are 7 inches long and 5 inches wide.

Leaf Color and Details
Hosta Lunar Orbit has heart-shaped variegated leaves which have a yellow center with 1 inch green margins. This plant has a slight streaking habit and the 2 colors blend together on occasion. Like its parent plant Lunar Orbits base color can (but not often) change to orange. This only happens if the plant gets exactly the right amount of sunlight and figuring out just how much can be a challenge.

Flower Color and Details
This plant has lavender flowers which bloom from early June to early August. The flowers are held on 15 inch flower stalks. The seed of Lunar Orbit Hosta is viable and can be used for breeding but the seed will not make a plant that is identical to the parent plant. This is not a patented plant and can be divided often to increase the number that you have in the garden.

Hosta Lunar Orbit is a great plant that will work well in any shade garden. Plant this variety with other shade loving plants such as Astilbe, Heuchera, and other Hostas for a great splash of color.
