Hosta Stained Glass Information

Hosta Stained Glass was the Hosta of the Year in 2006. It is also the 6th most popular Hosta today according to the American Hosta society. Stained Glass is a sport of the popular Hosta Guacamole. This plant is colorful, fast growing, and sun resistant Hosta.

Plant and Leaf Size
Hosta Stained Glass is a large plant that grows to a height of 20 inches and can form a clump that is 35 inches in diameter. The leaves of Stained Glass are 10.5 inches long and 7 inches wide. This plant needs plenty of room in order to spread out and form a great looking clump of variegated foliage. The leaves are pretty flat on this plant but that flatness sets off the strong and prominent veins which give this plant its unique "stained glass" appearance.

Leaf Color and Details
The coloration of Stained Glass Hosta is what makes it so popular in gardens. It begins the season mainly green but the center soon changes to a yellow gold which is set off by wide dark green margins. The golden yellow color is bright and this plant maintains that color longer than its parent plant.

Flower Color and Details
Fragrant Hosta plants are not easy to come by and one such as Stained Glass that also has very attractive foliage is in demand. The white flowers bloom late in the season but the fragrance of the flowers makes it worth the wait. The flowers stalks are 30 inches high.

This Hosta variety is hardy and does not require any special care other than finding just the right amount of sun in the garden to make it show its best colors. The seed of this Hosta is sterile and propagation must be done by division. This isn't a big problem for fast growing Hosta plants. In a very short number of seasons Stained Glass Hosta can be divided to create additional clumps to plant in the garden.

Companions for Hosta Stained Glass include Heuchera Electra, Hosta June.
