Hosta Tiny Tears
Quick Facts:
#4 ranked Hosta, green leaves, shade only, not slug resistant, purple flowers, sterile seeds
Hosta Tiny Tears is #4 on the best mini-Hosta list for 2010 according to the American Hosta Society. This is plant is very small and has a groundcover type appearance. It's a very attractive plant but to me doesn't really look like a Hosta should. It's not a bad thing to be unique though and its rating proves that.
Tiny Tears is a hybrid of Hosta venusta which is the #6 of the top 10 best mini Hostas for 2010. Tiny Tears is the parent of the 9th rated mini which is Hosta Cookie Crumbs.
Hosta Tiny Tears grows to 6 inches high and forms a clump that is 10 inches wide. Although this plant forms a compact clump it doesn't form an orderly clump. That's why it reminds me of a groundcover instead of a Hosta. It seems to grow rather willy-nilly.
The leaves are a solid medium green color and they are tiny. The leaves are 1 inch long by .75 inches wide.
The purple flowers bloom from June to July and the bloom stalks are 8 inches high. The seed of Hosta Tiny Tears is not viable and division is the only way to propagate this plant. It has a medium rate of growth so it will not take too many years before this plant is large enough to divide.
This is an unusual miniature Hosta plant. Hosta Tiny Tears works best when planted in a mass planting and looks great in and around garden pavers. This plant may not work out in the most formal of gardens but in a casual or woodland garden this makes a great accent plant.
