Hosta venusta
Quick Facts:
Ranked #6 on the list of best Miniature Hostas, solid green leaves, lavender flowers, red spotted petioles, not slug resistant.
Hosta venusta is #6 on the list of best miniature Hostas for 2010. It is one of the few species Hosta to make any of the American Hosta Society listings and has been very important in the breeding of miniature Hostas. It also has red mottled petioles and the "red Hostas" as they are called are gaining in popularity.
This Hosta is has fairly tame colors by Hosta standards but it is a great plant for any small shade garden. It forms an attractive mound which can be used as a foil for other plants or as a small specimen itself. It can be grown in rock gardens, pots, borders, or as a mass planting. This species is not slug resistant and should be planted where it will not be bothered by these pests.
Venusta grows to 5 inches high and forms a clump that is 9 inches wide. The oval leaves are 1.5 inches long and up to 1 inch wide. The leaves of Hosta venusta are a solid green color, shiny, and slightly wavy.
This is a shade Hosta and should not be planted in the sun. The leaves are not slug resistant. The flowers of venusta are lavender. This plant should be propagated by division. It is a species so if there is no chance of cross pollination you could get seeds that are true to type I wouldn't trust it to happen.
Hosta venusta is a nice solid miniature Hosta which would work great in any shady garden spot. This is a tough plant and if given the proper conditions it will thrive for many years.
