Hot Tubs: Great for What Ails You

You probably know that hot tubs are terrific for relieving stress. The jets' water swirls around you, heating your body and making it relax. There is, in fact, probably nothing like a good 20-30 minute soak in a hot tub to relieve the tension in your body.

Hot Tubs are Excellent Therapy

But did you know that hot tubs also help combat pain and other complications from diseases, chronic illnesses and sports injuries? Indeed, they do. For example, a hot tub is terrific for giving arthritis sufferers relief because the water makes the body 90% buoyant and the heat calms the muscles and joints. In fact, the Arthritis Foundation recommends the use of hot tubs for therapy. As you soak, you see, the pressure on your joints is alleviated. What relief you'll feel.

For the same reason, a hot tub and its hydrotherapy offers relief for those suffering with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome (CFIDS). That's because the muscles of people with these chronic illnesses become very tight yet the water, as with arthritis sufferers, warms the muscles and loosens them up. Fibromyalgia suffers have trigger points on their bodies that, when touched, cause great discomfort or even screaming pain. But when a person soaks in hot tubs, the trigger points calm down -- and so does the person. This can allow the fibromyalgia victim to move more easily and even exercise after hot tub therapy -- a rare event, yet necessary for treatment. CFIDS sufferers are always tense and so the hot tubs can also help them feel better. Hydrotherapy is thus beneficial for both of these almost untreatable conditions. People with these diseases are even known to have less need for medications with hot tub treatment.
Relaxing in a Hot Tub

Another disease hot tub therapy is great for is type 2 diabetes. Indeed, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that 13 people with the disease lowered their blood sugar levels with the hot tub use and regular exercise. All they had to do was soak for 20 minutes in hot tubs six days per week and exercise every day and voila -- their blood sugar lowered. This is important because diabetes is a serious condition, often requiring treatment with insulin. How amazing is that?

Sports therapists have long known the benefits hydrotherapy can give to injured athletes. When a n athlete tears a ligament, for example, she is often sent to hot tubs to bring relief and help her heal faster. Again, this is because her body will become 90% buoyant and all the stress will be alleviated. You, too, can benefit from hydrotherapy in hot tubs if you use one after you exercise.

If you have a sleep disorder, then a hot tub soak before bed may be the answer to a good night's sleep. As your body temperature rises from the heat of the hot tub, you'll become sleepy. Then once you do fall asleep, you'll experience more REM sleep than you otherwise would. You might even be able to throw that Ambien away!

In all, hot tubs and the hydrotherapy you get from them can really help a lot of conditions, be they temporary or chronic. If you suffer from any of these problems, try a session in a hot tub and see how wonderful you feel after!
