How Beneficial is Soy Yogurt to Health?

By | Dec 6, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Soy yogurts are now gaining popularity on the market and in a lot of healthy dietary recommendations. These yogurts are healthy, nutritious and definitely delicious.

Soy yogurts are not your ordinary yogurt. They are developed by using milk made from soy, or soy milk. Just like the regular dairy yogurts we usually buy, soy yogurts also have lactobacteria that aid in the promotion of healthy bacteria in our colon. Soy yogurts also have a lower fat content than dairy yogurts.

The health benefits of soy yogurt are accepted by a lot of international health and dietician organizations, including the Food and Drug Administration in the United States of America. Some of the popular benefits of soy yogurt include improving heart and bone health, lessening the symptoms of bowel disorders and menopause, and preventing and/or treating the complications of Type 2 diabetes.

A lot of studies showed that soy yogurt can promote a healthier heart. A person's cholesterol levels may be reduced by simply consuming 20 to 25 grams of soy products every day, as shown by a 1993 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Soy products are also very rich in calcium. Calcium, as we might have already known, protects the bones and avoids conditions like osteoporosis. According to a 2005 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, consuming soy products, like soy yogurt - and similarly foods containing soy - has a positive effect on reducing the risk of a bone fracture.

As mentioned, soy yogurt contains significant amounts of lactobacteria. These lactobacteria help in keeping the colon and even the entire digestive system healthy. They also regulate and enhance the digestion process and lower the risk of colon cancer. They also decrease the number of cancer-causing acids in the digestive system and block harmful chemicals in the body before they even become cancerous. Soy yogurt is also rich in probiotics which lessen the severity of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and other gastrointestinal problems.

There is also a positive correlation between eating soy foods and lessened menopausal symptoms. For instance, in Japan, where foods rich in soy are usually found almost everywhere, only a small portion of women complain of painful and uncomfortable menopause, unlike in the United States and in Canada where soy foods are not very much popular.

One of the most recent findings about the health benefits of soy yogurt is its ability to prevent and cure type 2 Diabetes. According to a 2006 research conducted by scientists at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, soy yogurt can help in regulating the enzymes that influence the level of blood sugar for people that are inflicted with type 2 Diabetes.

Soy yogurts are still subject to different scientific examinations and experiments. Dieticians and nutritionists though, continue to recommend soy yogurt to people who need to address health problems similar to the aforementioned. While dairy yogurts are also nutritious and healthy, soy yogurts are still a good alternative, most especially to people who are not allowed to eat dairy products like vegetarians, Jews, and those who are lactose intolerant.
