What Should I Do With My Life?
This is a question that haunts everyone at some point. Is this really what I want out of life? Am I missing something? Will I regret this later? While it might be common to think that it is only young people who face these antagonizing decisions, everyone from every walk of life questions their place in the world at one point or another. It is never to late to follow your dreams, and this article will hopefully help you to do just that.
In many cases people who are unhappy find themselves in one of these situations:
- A career they hate
- No time for the hobbies they do care about
- The feeling that they missed their chance to do something great
In many cases, people can be all three of those. What is the best way to break out of those ruts and attack your dreams? It is a simple method that I have been using for years now and it is always useful.
- Decide What Your Ideal Place Is
What do I mean by this? This means decide, right now, what is your perfect life? What in the world would most make you happy? Now don't say "A fancy car". That is not a lifestyle or a way of living. Decide what kind of mode of living makes you happy. Do you want to be traveling the world, playing music, and volunteering? Decide what you want, and be specific. Also, don't be afraid to make it ridiculous and over the top. Have that ideal world in your head? Awesome, keep it in mind.
2. Work Your Way Backwards
Alright, so you know what you want out of life and what ideal lifestyle suits you best. Now we work backwards. If you are wealthy, why is that? Are you the owner of a multimillion dollar company? Are you an ace investor? Did you invent something valuable? After you have determined the various next-to-last steps needed to get where you want, you repeat the process. If you're an ace investor or you invented something, how? Did you attend a business school or become an engineer? Once again you work backwards from your dream to the mechanism that achieved that dream.
3. Repeat Infinitely Until You Arrive Back Where You Are Now
You can keep repeating this over and over, getting as specific as you want. Specificity is the best thing you can do for yourself in this situation! Eventually you will get back to where you are right now, and you will know exactly what your next step should be in order to achieve your goal. For instance, if you eventually work your way back to being an engineer, then you need to go to school to be an engineer. That means you need strong math and science skills. Your next step is to start practicing math. This small decision should, by your reasoning, put you on a path to invent and become wealthy if you follow every small step as carefully as possible.
I hope this simple technique will help you focus and decide the next step in achieving your dreams. If you ever want any advice shoot me an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org where I help people pick career paths and realize their dreams by helping them every step of the process.
