Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs Bed Bug Treatment

How do bed bugs spread is a question that many people are asking these days as bed bugs are practically an epidemic in New York and other large cities. When my sister got bed bugs I decided I would do some research and find out as much as I could about the spreading of bed bugs. I certainly didn't want to get them and as a precaution I didn't venture into her apartment until she got rid of them. She got them from friends, believe it or not, that she allowed to spend the night.

One reason bed bugs are spread so easily is that many of us don't know anything about them, so we're not aware that we should be on the alert. Once we're  informed on how bed bugs spread then we know what to do. Another reason bed bugs are spreading is the myth that only dirty or unsanitary people get bed bugs. Bed bugs don't care about dirt they want blood.

You also need to be aware that many times bed bugs are spread in public places such as movie theaters where it's dark and there are a lot of people sitting close to one another. The nasty little critters can crawl about undetected into pockets and purses without anyone being the wiser. If they haven't fed in a while their bodies become flat and this allows them to fit into very tight places.

Other public places to be extra cautious are thrift stores and garage and yard sales. Bed bugs can live for several months without feeding in furniture and clothing and as mentioned above are very hard to spot since their bodies will be flat from not eating for long periods of time. Sometimes you can detect that they're present by fecal waste left behind, which are tiny dark specks.

Bed bugs get totally out of control in large old apartment buildings like the ones in NYC due to all the crevices and cracks that are readily available for them to creepy crawly about. They travel from one apartment to the other this is why they're so hard to get rid of in these types of living conditions. They go back and forth stressing out everybody living in the building.

Believe me, bed bugs are not something you want to encounter, so it's wise to take whatever precautions necessary to prevent them. Call me paranoid, but I don't go into movie theaters anymore or buy used furniture or clothing without inspecting them in great detail. Do with this information as you will and if you decide to disregard it you can't say I didn't warn you.

Prevent Bed Bud Spreading at Home

To prevent bed bug spreading you need to inspect clothing and belongings when you get home from public places where you are in close contact with strangers for any length of time. Purses are perfect hiding places with all those dark little compartments. This is why it's a good idea to keep purses de-cluttered. In addition, turn pockets inside out and inspect seams in clothing.

Invest in a zippered mattress protector, so that if you do bring bed bugs home they can't get into the mattress. Better yet, cover the pillows and box springs with zippered coverings as well. A regular mattress cover will not provide adequate protection everything must be completely encased and zipped up, so that bed bugs don't stand a chance of getting through.

Keep bedding off of the floor and as an extra precaution attach two sided tape on the legs of the bed to prevent bed bugs from crawling up. They might try, but will be caught in your trap while you sleep safe and sound. It's a matter of survival with these determined little pests. Trust me; you don't want to get bitten by bed bugs. I saw bites on my sister and they were awful.

De-clutter your home or apartment. Clutter makes it hard to inspect for bed bugs and gives them extra places to hide. Besides, if you discover you actually do have them and need to exterminate there will be all of this unnecessary stuff for them to lay eggs in and escape to.

Lastly, consider the purchase of a Bed Bug Kit, which has everything you will need if by chance you discover bed bugs in your home. Look at it this way, when you have ammunition from the very beginning you can keep bed bug infestation from escalating and also have some much needed protection for you and your family until the exterminator can get there.

Now when someone asks how do bed bugs spread you will have the answer.
