EKG, or electrocardiogram, tests are conducted in order to help physicians assess the health of their patients' hearts. For those with a history of heart disease, EKG tests are a routine part of their regular doctor visits. The EKG works by recording the heart's electrical impulses through electrodes that are strategically attached to the patient's body. The results of the EKG are displayed on a computer monitor and then printed out on graph paper so that physicians and EKG technicians can analyze them and help determine the state of the patient's heart health.

The basic way in which doctors and EKG technicians measure the health of a patient's heart is by comparing the readings of the patient's hear with the EKG readings of a normal heart. If there are differences in heart rate and rhythm between the two graphs, it could mean a possible sign of current or past heart problems. In this type of scenario, further testing is usually prescribed.

Heart rate is the first thing that EKG technicians look at. The heart rate can be determined by studying the spikes that are visible on the EKG graph. The first spike of on the graph, the "P" spike, is the one that indicates the impulses coming from the upper chamber of the heart. The "PR" interval is the line representing the time between spikes, i.e. the contraction and relaxation of the atria. Each EKG results graph has a series of these spikes and dips which form a pattern representing the heart's electrical impulses.

The pattern of spikes of a normal heart is called sinus arrhythmia. The EKG readout of a healthy patient's heart should more or less match this sinus arrhythmia pattern. If there are irregularities between the patient's pattern and the healthy sinus arrhythmia patterns, it could be a sign of heart problems. In this case, physicians usually rely on the suggestions of the EKG technicians, as the technicians are the top authority when it comes to the analysis of EKG readings.
