How Lasers are Used in Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology has been on the forefront of laser surgery. Laser, an acronym for light amplified by stimulated emission of radiation, is an apparatus that uses electromagnetic radiation, or high energy light waves called photons, which, unlike other radiation heat sources, all act in sync to create an extreme power source. Lasers play a tremendous role in modern ophthalmology for surgical procedures of the eye. It is used to alter human tissue or to activate drugs when treating ocular diseases.
When Laser is Used in Ophthalmology
Some instances lasers can be used in ophthalmology are as such:
⢠To help vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy;
⢠To help vision loss due to senile macular degeneration;
⢠To help with fluid function due to glaucoma trabeculoplasty;
⢠To help restore vision as a follow-up to cataract surgery;
⢠To help eliminate the need for glasses; and
⢠For cosmetic procedures to the eyelids.
How Laser is Used in Ophthalmology
In ophthalmology, the patient is awake under a microscope specialized with an ophthalmology laser attached, such is the case with green laser photocoagulation treatment. The laser is focused on the intended area and then a number of quick burst of laser energy is dispersed to perform the procedure. Usually, no anesthesia is needed; though, in some cases, local anesthetic may be used. Laser eye surgery does not last long, usually anywhere from five to twenty minutes, and is, for the most part, a painless procedure. After the surgery, the patient is immediately able to perform his everyday routine.
What Complications Lasers Can Have in Ophthalmology
For the most part, laser in ophthalmology is usually safe and painless; although, just as is the case with any surgery, complications can occur. One of the more common complications with laser surgery is tissue damage due to the high heat of the energy source. Bleeding and vision loss, which are extreme cases that are very uncommon, are other known complications. To help prevent such complications, it is important to do your research.
