Zumba dance workouts have hit the fitness scene and people have gone absolutely crazy for it. Zumba fitness centers have cropped up everywhere, and when a local gym offers it, people literally line up for a place in the Zumba class. Many people who are trying to lose weight through Zumba or any other dance cardio workout will wonder; how many calories does Zumba burn?

As is true with any other type of physical activity, it's going to vary widely on the amount of effort your our into the class. There is a big difference in the amount of calories burnt in a workout where you are just going through the motions, versus one where you are really pushing your body in terms of cardiovascular output and muscle focus (maintaining proper form and flexing your muscles as you move).

So the range of calories burnt in a Zumba workout can range between 200-800, likely averaging around 400-500 an hour for most people. This is a significant calorie burn during an hour long workout; it's similar to what you might obtain doing walk/jogging intervals.

The biggest benefit to a dance workout is all of the muscles you will tweak and tone in doing all the wide variations of Zumba dance workout moves. The movements are always changing, and so your muscles must keep guessing-a good thing for while you are trying to tone and lose weight.

What other benefits does Zumba have to offer someone seeking a fit physique? Lots! Number one; it's fun, which can make going to Zumba dance workout classes easy to do. As is true when trying to burn more calorie for weight loss, consistency is key; with dance cardio workouts, nutrition and weight training. Doing Zumba dance cardio workouts twice a week, and doing weight training another two times a week would be a great way to lose weight fast- any more than that and you might be exhausting both your body and your efforts. Remember to eat healthy, fresh, and clean while you're working your body strenuously with dance cardio workouts. A well rounded approach is the best approach!

Good background on Zumba. It's a great workout for those interested in dancing and aerobics. Extremely conditioned individuals may not benefit as much, but Zumba will burn calories nevertheless!

My daughter loves Zumba! She does it at least 3 times a week at our local gym. She's hooked and trying to talk me into it (I do like the music).
