How Much Can You Earn From Writing Articles Online?

By Edited May 4, 2014 0 0

You may have heard of other writers, who left their regular office jobs to pursue a home based career. Thinking about following their lead is natural, especially if you are someone who hates the idea of a fixed commitment 9 hours a day, 5 days a week. But the question is, how much can you earn from writing articles online? Is it even enough to pay the bills, or is it just for people who don’t need money the way you do.

The Online Writing Job

Online writing is not limited to blogs and web contents. You can write product reviews, e-books, newsletters, or anything from the creative writing genre. You can choose to become independent and market your own articles, or join online writing sites that offer guaranteed income. Although you can increase your earning potentials by having your own website, some writers are able to make money from writing even without one. Beware of websites that require you to pay to sign up as a writer, though. Most of them are scams.

Passive vs Upfront Payment

There are basically 2 types of income to watch out for when writing articles online: passive and upfront. Passive income refers to the earnings accrued by your articles for each time they are viewed. Also, by allowing advertisers to post ads in your webpage, you get a portion of the pay per click (PPC) revenues. A fixed amount is paid to you whenever someone clicks on the ads on display. Some of the most popular advertisers that offer PPC schemes include Google Adsense, Chitika, Amazon, and eBay.

On the other hand, upfront payment is a one-time fee offered for each article or set of articles. Once the publisher approves your work, you will get the price agreed. If you are new to this trade, you may want to register with websites that offer upfront payment for writing articles online. It is not always easy to find publishers or individual clients to write for.  You will need help from legitimate sites that offer work to freelance writers.

Is it Really Worth it?

It depends on a lot of things. First is how fast you can write. The average cost of a regular 500-word article is $5; just imagine how much you can make at the end of the day if you are fast and consistent. Next is the quality of your work. Clients reserve the right to refuse an article if it doesn’t measure up to their standards. However, you may charge more if you can prove to be a high-caliber writer. Third is your field of expertise. Writers who are able to provide professional opinion in their writing typically make more money than those who write about general knowledge.

Writing articles online is not a get-rich scheme. But through hard work and active participation in websites that offer guaranteed income, it can help pay the bills. Depending on how much is enough for you, you can polish your writing skill and find as many opportunities as you can to monetize your articles.
