How Spinach Can Improve Your Life

The Benefits of Spinach

Did you know that one of the most powerful foods known to man is stocked cheaply in the front of virtually any grocery store? Many people believe that to get the best health, they need to spend a lot of money or seek out exotic fruits and vegetables. While superfruits do have their place in one's diet and can improve health, the most powerful benefits can be derived simply by consuming enough of the common stuff we've all heard of.

The food being discussed here is, as you already know from the title of the article, is spinach. But what makes spinach so good? There are a few qualities that make it stand out from other vegetables. First, it is extremely high in Vitamins A and C, antioxidant vitamins which are used in a variety of immune system reactions. And because they are antioxidants, they reduce the risk of cancer and other detrimental diseases. The combination of these vitamins helps essentially every system in your body, including the digestive system. If your digestive system is not functioning properly, then everything else you put into your body will not be absorbed correctly. Furthermore, toxins will not be eliminated from the body as efficiently, allowing them to accrue and cause damage over time. The folate in spinach is particularly useful for protecting the gastrointestinal tract, and enhancing the vital digestive processes that allow you to get the most from your food.

There are several unique substances in spinach which present perhaps even greater benefits than the vitamins. These compounds include a comprehensive variety of flavonoids, carotenoids, and lutein, a special chemical which is remarkably effective for protecting eyesight and reducing eye problems. Of course, the flavonoids and carotenoids are primarily useful for the immune system and acting as anti-inflammatory agents, reducing all kinds of disease and helping to maintain energy and mental acuity throughout the day.

Spinach is also one of the most available vegetables, and is found everywhere. However, it is very important to get organic spinach, as non-organic spinach is one of the most heavy pesticide sprayed crops around (on that topic, apples are too, so try to avoid non-organic apples whenever possible). By adhering to these principles and eating substantial quantities of spinach a day, you can radically improve your health through the consumption of this one simple green leaf!
