How To Apply Decorative Window Film To A Window

Using decorative window film is an easy and inexpensive way to decorate a window or a glass door. There are many different looks and styles available to use in your home. They range form covering a whole window to just using accents in the corner or running a border on the window.

The hang up most people have is that they think they need to hire someone to do it for them. You can if you have the budget for it, but you can also do it yourself.

It may seem hard at first, but with some planning, patience and someone to help you (it is helpful to have an extra set of hands) you can have a professional looking job.

Let's go over step by step on how you can install your own decorative window film.

First, you are going to need some tools to install window film. You are going to need the following: a straight edge razor, tape measure, scissors, ruler a spray bottle filled with water, paper towels and a squeegee that usually comes with the kit.

Clean the window well. You will want o t remove all dirt and grease so that the film will cling better. Use a razor blade to remove any old paint splatters and other gunk that doesn't' wipe off.

Measure out the glass surface. You will be measuring height and width. Allow about half an inch on all sides of excess material. This will be trimmed off later.

Spray the glass surface with water. You will want it nice and wet. This will allow you to shift and position the window film. You may want to add a drop or 2 of dish soap to the water in the spray bottle.

Lay out the cut film. Have your extra set of hands hold the film as you remove the backing. Do not let the film cling to itself. Apply water to the cling side of the window film now.

Place the wet window film to the glass surface. You may need to spray some more water on it. Begin to gently remove excess water and any air bubbles from the film. Use the squeegee to work out the air bubbles. Begin in the center of the film and work them out to the edges. Be gentle when doing this.

If you are happy where the film is placed, use the ruler and razor to trim off the excess film.
