Burnout can easily happen to any of us.  We all experience stress on a regular basis.  This ongoing stress can wreak havoc on our physical, mental and emotional health.  The simple fact is that unrelenting pressures can and will lead to burnout.  Below are a few ways that can help us to avoid burnout.

#1 Make time for yourself a priority.  There is a time for work and a time for self.  Chronic overwork destroys health and causes disease.  Taking time for yourself through rest and relaxation is extremely important for your mental health.  Your immune system can be compromised and mental reserves extinguished when you don’t take time to get your needed rest.

#2 Create boundaries and stick to them.  You can’t be all things to all people.  Learn how to say no.  Those who truly love you will understand that it is not selfish to need your rest.  You are in a better position to help others when you revitalize yourself.  Giving constantly is draining and can lead to feelings of discouragement and even resentment.

#3 Exercise is the best remedy for preventing burnout so get moving.  The stress at work or at home can be very damaging to our health.  Exercise is a great release for this stress.  Making friends at the gym can also provide you with a support system that can help minimize your stress levels. 

#4 When at work or home take as many breaks as you need to.  Staring at a computer screen when you are stressed out does more harm than good.  Go outside and get a breath of fresh air.  Visit an office mate or neighbor and vent about your day.  A ten minute brisk walk does wonders for reducing your stress levels.  Breaks can renew and energize you for the rest of the day.

#5 Restructure your things to list when necessary.  If certain activities or work related tasks are mentally draining switch them out with less stressful work.  Work that doesn’t require a great deal of mental energy can give you just the break that you need when you are feeling stressed.

#6 Get some much needed sleep.  Sleep is an essential part of the body’s healing mechanism.  If you are having trouble sleeping, exercise early in the day.  This can help you fall asleep at night.  Try relaxation tips at night like dimmed lights, soothing music, or a hot bath.  Read a relaxing book that you enjoy before going to sleep.  A relaxing nighttime routine can prepare the
mind for sleep.  Sleep can give you the tools needed to cope with whatever stress awaits you the next day.

Burnout doesn’t have to happen but it will if we don’t make the changes the body needs to renew itself.  Try just one tip and then try another.  These tips are just a few that help the body  to avoid burnout.
