sunflower (17840)Where is the line between eccentric and just plain weird? Do you really have a diagnosable mental illness . . . . . or maybe you are just eccentric? How many people who are now labeled somewhere on the autism spectrum would previously have just been called eccentric? Do you worry that you are just plain boring, and you wish you could be eccentric? Everyone needs an odd, quirky, fun friend in their lives, so if you don't have one, maybe that means you're It! Step up to the plate and learn how to be eccentric! Your square-peg self is a gift to the world!

Things You Will Need

various other items, optional

Step 1

Choose a pet. Eccentric people generally end up spending quite a bit of time alone, so a pet is a nice companion. A wampass cat or whangdoodle are best, but an iguana or rat will do in a pinch.

Step 2

Choose an art. Eccentric people must have something that sings in their heart and calls to them from the depths of despair, or even simply away from lunch during a moment of sudden inspiration. Most likely you knew what your art was when you were in junior high. Most likely you have been neglecting it. Most likely your art is not "art" in terms of paint or music or dance or other things people have narrowed the definition of art to mean. Remember what it is, and do more of it now, and you'll feel better.

Step 3

Set up a homebase you can return to, that is suitable for both your art and your pet. Eccentric souls tend to wander off on a regular basis, but it is nice to have a place to come back to. It's also nice not to haul your stuff all the time, or sell it and re-buy it all every 3-5 years. This can begin to feel tiresome after awhile.

Step 4

Sing. Read a lot. Kill your TV. Beat your car to death with a big stick. Eat a vegetable now and then. Go outside. Help other people every day, all you can (until your art calls you, of course). Love life, smile a lot, and stay ever-hopeful and cheery.
By taking these short simple steps towards a new life, you'll be amazed at how much better you will soon feel. Eventually someone will say, "I've never met anyone quite like you before" and you will know you've achieved your original goal of being eccentric! (but meanwhile, of course, you are moving on to other things, right . . ?!) :)
