How To Be More At Ease While Driving To New Places

It can be really scary for some people to drive to new places. They feel horrified at the thought of driving to unknown and their anxiety levels shoot to record high. There are countless reasons which contribute to this type of fear such as:

  • Some people find it hard to follow directions.
  • Fear of getting lost.
  • You have no idea about the nature of road you are going to travel on.
  • You may have an accident because you have no idea of traffic patterns in that particular area.
  • You may lose your track and may not get back on it.

Above mentioned are some of the most common reasons which come in mind when you thing about driving to new or unknown places. You can suffer from high level of anxiety and stress if you don’t thoroughly know the area where you are going to.

Fear of missing a turn also stems from the above reason. You are definitely going to be stressful when you realize that you have missed the turn you were supposed to take. It will not only cause stress but panic will also creep in.

Sometimes, it also happens that you tack the wrong turn and simply cannot get back to the right track which leads to your destination. It goes beyond saying that fear of getting lost is one of the biggest reasons why people are afraid to drive to unknown places. Things can get quite dreadful especially when you are traveling alone. In these circumstances, another fear may start to occupy your mind. It is the fear of having an accident as you are not familiar with driving habits of locals and traffic patterns.  

Sometimes, you cannot navigate the traffic circles in new places because you have never driven in those circles before. As a result, you may keep on driving in circles without even realizing that you have been stuck in the same place.

It may also be difficult for you to watch the road and follow the instructions at the same time making it a nightmare for you to drive on alien roads.

Everyone, including me, has suffered from one or all of these fears when it comes to driving to new places. For many years, I managed to avoid driving on such roads. As a matter of fact, I would always try to find someone to drive for me. This makes thing little easier because you don’t feel as horrible and stressful, when you miss a turn or get on the wrong track, as when you are traveling alone.

However, you cannot live with your fears for whole life and ultimately, you have to overcome them. Therefore, it is imperative for you to keep your fears aside and set to the unknown destinations all at your own.

Following are some tips which will help you to be less fearful.

  • Take a friend or colleague with you until you are fully comfortable with driving on unknown roads.
  • Keep the map of the place you are traveling to in your car.
  • Keep yourself updated on the local traffic issues.
  • Install a reliable GPS system in your vehicle.
  • Many cars come with On Star system. If your car has one, keep it activated.

How these Tips are Really Helpful:

You cannot possibly have a friend with you on each tour. You should try to overcome your fears as early as possible. However, it can be really helpful to have a partner with you until you are fully used to driving to unknown places.

A map is your best companion when you are traveling to a new place. It helps avoid getting lost and stay on the right path. The map will make it possible for you to get to your destination without any hassle.

Another option is to install the latest GPS system in your car. GPS allows you to drive with more concentration as you don’t you have read written directions again and again. Some GPS also inform you about which road to take and where to turn from in advance eliminating the chances of getting lost or missing a turn.

It is absolutely important for you to keep a fully charged cell phone with you as well. Always take spare batteries and a traveler charges with you as well. This will make sure that you are able to contact someone in case of any emergency.

Finally, keep abreast of latest traffic and area news. You can easily get such information from different radio stations. Knowing more about traffic situation of the area you are going to can offer you a much needed piece of mind while driving.

Your anxiety levels can increase considerably while you are traveling to new places. In this regard, you can become more at ease if you implement any or all of the abovementioned tips.
