How To Be Productive When You Work From Home
Working from home is something that carries with it a host of wonderful benefits. Not only are you able to be your own boss and choose your own working hours, but you will also have the great benefit of being able to stay in your own home and not have to commute to your workplace.
However, working from home carries with it a few problems as well, not least the fact that it can be tricky trying to motivate yourself and stay disciplined all of the time. You need to make sure that you avoid all distractions and procrastinations and as such here are some tips on how to be productive when you work from home.
If you work in an office then you have generally have to wear a certain attire. You need to try to mimic this in your own home. While this doesn't necessarily mean getting up every morning and putting on your favourite suit, it does mean creating a morning ritual that is going to get you out of your home life pattern and put you into a working state of mind.
As such, you shouldn't simply fall out of your bed in your pajamas and slippers and wander downstairs to have some breakfast and watch a bit of morning TV. You need to focus as you would if you had to get up in the morning and commute to work. Would you have time for a casual morning routine with a job outside the home? Probably not. Therefore you shouldn't allow this into your schedule when working from home either.
A second point is to create an office space within your own home. If you really want to be productive then you need to separate a certain area of your house for your work. Do not simply try to work when sitting on the sofa and watching TV, this isn't going to be the best atmosphere for it. Try to create a specific office space where you can get into the working mindset immediately even if you use a laptop to work from home online.
It is absolutely imperative that you reduce all distractions that could prevent you from working in the most productive fashion within your home. All sorts of things can occur that will distract your attention. The phone could ring, a door-to-door salesman could come over, you might realise that your favorite radio show is on. Whatever it is, eliminate all distractions during the working day and set aside time to focus your attention specifically on your work.
It is imperative that you set goals. Goal setting is crucial in gaining success in anything in your life and therefore you need to have specific goals for the month, week, and day. If you don't have any goals to meet by the end of the day this is going to limit your productivity. If you work online from home, be sure to meet certain goals before you allow yourself to check email or visit your favorite forum.
You may also want to set aside a specific lunchbreak as you would if you worked a regular job. If you don't do this then you may be getting up and heading off into the kitchen every five minutes for a snack. Allow yourself half an hour or an hour at lunch and do not let your appetite encroach on any of your working time.
All in all, these tips should certainly help you to stay productive when working from home.
