The training varies greatly between the different disciplines, and there are literally hundreds of different types of massage.

For that reason the first thing you need to decide on is which kind of massage therapist you want to become. This will be decided by personal reasons such as how much time you can dedicate to training, how much training you can afford to pay for as well as which appeals to you the most.

One of the more difficult types of massage to train in is sports massage. This is because it takes a lot of skill, but also a lot of knowledge of the human body. The idea of sports massage is to use massage as a treatment for sports injuries, so it requires a much deeper knowledge of the muscular system as well as how the human body works as a whole. The upside is that sports massage therapists are often highly in demand and can find jobs not just in their local area but also all the way up to professional sport. If you want to train to become a sports massage therapist though the training is quite long and you will need to commit a lot of your time to learning about the muscular and skeletal system.

Other forms of massage won't have the same sort of training required, but they will all involve some sort of course to get going. You may also need other certifications and training depending on where in the world you live but you will need to study this carefully.

Take your time when deciding and don't rush into a decision so that you can be sure you've made the right choice.
