How To Choose The Right Rehab Treatment Center

By Edited Jan 8, 2014 0 0

Overcoming a substance disorder is one of the most important achievements in anyone’s life. While the task may seem daunting, the resources to guide one down the path of sobriety are many and varied. Inpatient rehab has historically proven to be one of the more successful treatment avenues. Choosing a rehab treatment center is a necessary first step in getting back to a healthy mode of living.

The natural inclination is to choose a drug treatment center that is close to home. However, this may not always be the best option. There are benefits to taking yourself far away from your “natural” environment. Away from old friends and familiar scenery, a rehab program might be easier to follow. Fewer distractions can lead to tighter focus on immediate goals, such as staying sober today.

Before choosing a rehab center, there are several pertinent questions that ought to be asked:

  • Is the center accredited by a regional or national agency?
  • What is the makeup of the staff?
  • What is the treatment philosophy?
  • Is there ready access to an emergency medical facility?
  • How much does the program cost?
  • How successful has the program been for previous guests?
  • What do the aftercare services consist of?

Depending upon the particular drugs in question, drug addiction rehab typically begins with a period of detoxification. During detox, you may experience unpleasant symptoms. It’s important that any rehab treatment center have the tools and resources to help you through this period.

After detox, real treatment begins. Although no two treatment centers are exactly alike, the underlying mission is always the same. Rehab’s purpose is to clear away the remnants of the drug-addicted personality and build up a strong foundation for a life of sobriety. Most facilities achieve this through a combination of individual and group therapy, guided daily activities, and character-building exercises.

It’s important that a drug treatment center’s rehabilitation philosophy align with that of the individual undergoing treatment. For instance, someone without a strong sense of faith will likely not benefit as much from Christian drug rehab as he or she would from a purely clinical approach. Likewise, not everyone will be interested in holistic approaches that include health foods and yoga. Therefore, you should investigate the fine details of any treatment program before making a commitment.

Unfortunately, in this day and age, cost is a severe limiting factor on one’s treatment options. Some rehab centers will gladly accept medical insurance, but many will not. In addition, many insurance providers place inflexible limits on the level of coverage provided for drug addiction treatment. All things being equal, out-of-pocket cost is often a make or break variable in the selection of a rehab facility.

Ultimately, a “best fit” rehab center is one in which the guest is comfortable, but not too comfortable (rehab is not easy), and the cost is within an acceptable range.
