Foods That Fight Aging

One of the most powerful anti aging foods are avocados.  Avocados are very high in antioxidants as well as oleic acid which help to fight free radicals.  Free radicals are what break down skin at the molecular level and cause wrinkles and lines.  The antioxidants in avocados kill these free radicals and create a healthy cellular environment.  Avocados can easily be added to most any diet as they are very healthy and make a great addition to a wide range of foods.  You can put them on a salad, use them as a tasty dip, or add them to hamburgers when you are grilling. 
 
Another one of the foods that fight aging are berries which include blackberries, blueberries, and cranberries.  These berries are fantastic because they contain a certain type antioxidant that slow the growth of some forms of cancer and studies have even been shown to improve muscle tone throughout the body.  Berries make a great snack by themselves, or they can be put in a blender to make smoothies, or as a delicious topping for low fat frozen yogurt if you are in the mood for a healthy snack.

Olive oil is one of the anti aging foods that is easiest to implement because it can be used in conjunction with so many different foods.  Studies show that olive oil can help fight cancer, and the natural physical decline that happens as people age.  It is a versatile part of the anti aging diet because it also works very well as a facial moisturizer.  Applied to damp skin and left on for ten minutes olive oil works as well as many expensive commercial moisturizers you will find(at a fraction of the price).  Olive oil can be used as a dressing on salads, sandwiches, and as a dip for bread (preferably whole wheat breads as they are healthier for you).
 
One of the most important additions you can make to the anti aging diet is acai berries.  Acai berries were discovered in tropical rain forests in South America and they truly are one of the worlds most powerful super-foods.  They contain some of the highest antioxidant levels of any food on this planet.  There are many products on the market that use acai berries as one of their main ingredients.  However, it is important to only buy products that list how much acai they actually are using in their product(make sure to read the ingredients list).  Some products proclaim that they have acai in them but do not list how much, meaning there could be only trace amounts in the actual product, just enough so they can put it on the label.  As with anything else do your homework before buying so you know that you are getting a quality acai product.
 
Tomatoes are another one of the foods that fight aging.  The reason for this is that tomatoes contain a compound named "lycopene".  Lycopene has been shown to help improve the texture of a person's skin and also can decrease the risk of heart attack and certain types of cancer.  It is best to get organic tomatoes whenever possible as they will have the highest nutrient value, but if this is not possible non organic tomatoes are still very healthy and contain lycopene.  When you eat tomatoes you want to eat them raw, tomatoes that are cooked or heated up in any way will lose some of their nutritional value and the antioxidants that you are looking for can disappear as well.

Many people know that fish is healthy and as far as anti aging foods go it can be great, but you have to watch where your fish comes from.  A lot of fish served in restaurants and supermarkets today is farm raised.  Farm raised fish lacks many of the antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids that fight inflammation in the body and provide nutritional support.  Not only that, but farm raised fish can also be stricken with disease if not raised in a healthy environment.  Wild caught fish is one of the foods that fight aging, farm raised fish is not.  
 
In order to get wild caught fish only buy your fish from a reputable market that clearly labels their fish as "wild caught".  If it is not labeled as "wild caught" then there is no way to know what you are really getting.  When eating fish in a restaurant the only thing you can do is ask your waiter if the fish is wild caught and only eat fish at reputable seafood restaurants, this is not a fail safe but in today's world it is all you can do for the most part when eating out.
 
The problems of farm raised fish are particularly big in regards to salmon.  Caught from the wild salmon are one of the healthiest fish you can eat and one of the most powerful foods that fight aging.  When they are farm raised they lose much of these nutrients and in some cases can even be harmful to your health if they were raised in unsanitary conditions.  
 
By making the right choices and knowing which foods are best for an anti aging diet you can go a long way in looking and feeling younger.  These choices listed above are a great way to help meet your goals of not only being healthy but looking great as well.
