MS Exchange is an application that is developed to provide support for e-mail based communicational needs of an organization. Using Exchange server, users can share information, with the help of either Outlook on their desktops or Outlook Web Access through a web browser.

If the communicational needs of an organization are mission-critical or business-critical, absence of a messaging system will cause millions of monetary loss to the organization. So, quick and fast moves will be needed in case any disaster hit Microsoft Exchange server.

One best disaster management strategy is to create backups. Exchange database files can always be restored using backups. Besides that, there are Disaster Recovery tools and wizards that can be used to repair Exchange database files.

Database Recovery Management Tool: It verifies database and transaction log files, analyzes log drive space, resets log generation number, repairs database, shows database-related event logs, creates the recovery storage group, mounts or dismounts the databases in the recovery storage group, removes the recovery storage group, merges or copies mailbox content and sets Database can be overwritten by restore option.

Database Troubleshooter Tool: It programmatically executes a set of troubleshooting steps to identify the root causes of database mounting issues and provides guidance for possible solutions with links to related database recovery management wizards. This tool automatically traces the set of data that is required to troubleshoot and collects configuration data, performance counters, event logs, and live tracing information from Exchange Server and other appropriate sources.

Exchange Server Database Utilities (Eseutil): Exchange Server Database Utilities or Eseutil.exe is a command-line tool that works with the Extensible Storage Engine, database files, and log files that are associated with an Exchange database. Eseutil can be used to verify, modify, and repair an Exchange database file. When a database is corrupt or damaged, you can restore data from backup or repair database using Eseutil.

Information Store Integrity Checker (Isinteg): It is used to find and eliminate errors from the public folder and mailbox databases at the application level. Isinteg is provided to assist in disaster recovery situations. As the Isinteg tool works at the logical schema level, it can recover data that cannot be recovered by Eseutil because data valid for the Eseutil tool at the physical schema level can be semantically invalid at the logical schema level.

In case of severe Exchange database corruption, these tools may not be helpful and you will need a good third party Exchange Server repair tool to repair .edb files. Using such a tool, you can effectively repair corrupt .edb files and store them in MS Outlook as .PST files. Later, an administrator can recover mailboxes, contacts and other information from these .PST files.
