How To Extreme Coupon

By Edited May 15, 2016 5 13

Extreme couponing has taken on a life of its own in our society. The popular show, Extreme Couponing, which aires on TLC has brought the secrets of extreme couponers into the spotlight.  They are able to save a ridiculous amount of money. If you would like to know how to extreme coupon here are some suggestions:

An extreme couponer must do a significant amount of research in order to get the best deals. This research can be conducted in many ways. The best resources are usually online forums and blogs.  The blogs tell you the best sales and the coupons to match with those sales.

Make A Plan

A hallmark of the good couponer is the ability to plan for all of the items they will buy on a shopping trip.

Shopping List(72767)
This type of planning will take time and a certain amount of money.  Extreme couponers usually buy multiple newspapers, order coupon clipping services, and print multiple coupons from websites.  Extreme couponors usually match up their coupons and the store's deals. At the very least, you need to make a shopping list.  A shopping list is crucial part of this process.

Get A System

If you are an extreme couponer you will need a system that will allow you to get to the coupons that you need. A popular option is a coupon binder.

Coupon Binder

You can find coupon binders at a local store such as Walmart or Target. If you want to make your own coupon binder, you will need to insert baseball card holders into the binder to hold your coupons.  You will also need to make a table of contents and insert sheet protectors to designate the topics in your binder.

Know Your Coupons

Make sure that you get coupons that are valid.  Your coupon should have a barcode and an expiration date (or state that there is not an expiration date).  You can make sure that a coupon is valid if you look online (there is a fraudulent coupon website).

Size Matters

While the size of an item may not matter in some circumstances, when you're trying to get the best deal, you want to make sure that you get the smallest item that you are allowed to get.  Some coupons will exclude certain sizes but many coupons will not. If you want to get the best deal, you may want to buy the smallest size that you can possibly buy.

Know The Coupon Policy

A store’s coupon policy can change at any time. Extreme couponers always check to make sure that they know the store's latest policy.  It is a good idea to keep a copy of the store’s coupon policy with you when you go to the store.

If you have the coupon policy with you, you are less likely to be surprised by the store's policies.  Some stores will limit the amount of coupons that you can use in a single transaction or the number of coupons that you can use for a particular item. If you do not know these rules you may not save the amount of money that you plan on saving.

Know The Specials

Many stores will run specials during the year.  The type of special will depend on the store.  Some stores will double a coupon up to a certain amount (usually a dollar).  If your store does double or even triple coupons, you should buy as many products as you can during this time.  You should also consider combining coupons with promotions like buy one get one free (BOGO) or ten for ten promotions.  Read the grocery advertisement to make sure that there are not any limitations on the offer.  If there are not any limitations you can save a lot of money if you use a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon.

Many of the best deals that couponers are able to get are due to their overage. An overage is the amount that one saves that is beyond zero dollars. For instance, if you have a total grocery bill of $25 and you have coupons worth $30 then your overage is five dollars. Many stores will allow you to buy items with your overage amount. This is the way that many people are able to get items that do not usually give coupons such as meat, vegetables, and bread for free.

Buy Into The System

There is a rhyme in the reason behind the coupons.  If you want to get the best deal on your items you will need to buy them at the proper time.  There is cycle that manufacturers tend to follow when putting products on sale.  As an extreme couponer you need to know this cycle so that you will stock up coupons for these items that you can then use during that time.  A good extreme couponer is going to try to buy at least six months worth of products at a time.  This method is only effective if they know that they are getting the best deals.  Typically the best deals are going to coincide with the sale cycle.

Unconventional Coupons

Manufacturers are reaching out in different ways in an effort to reach more consumers.  If you want coupons from a particular manufacturer, you should write them or sign up for their newsletter online. Additionally, many companies will provide you with a coupon if you like them on Facebook. Another popular method of getting coupons is by subscribing to their text messages (JCPenney is a popular business that text messages coupons).

Notify The Store

If you are going to purchase a large number of items, you want to make sure that the store will have enough of the item that you want to purchase. If you call the store, they will be able to tell you if they have enough items in stock.  If they do not, you should special order the item.  Just make sure that you are provide very specific details about the item that you want special ordered.

If you follow these suggestions you will know how to extreme coupon in no time.

I'd like to achieve "overage" but I never have more than one or two coupons when I go to the store. It must take an enormous amount of time to find unexpired coupons.

I have a question, is it really possible to exchange coupons for money? Sometimes the fine print says it's redeemable for 1/20 of a cent.

Having an overage is a great experience. You are right, it takes time to find multiple copies of the same coupon (unless you get multiple papers or buy them from a coupon clipping service).

Theoretically yes. I never tried it. If we used your example, you would need about 20 coupons just to make one cent and with the cost of postage you would end up losing money instead of making it.

Thanks for reading the article.
