How To Find The Best Rain Coat

By Edited Nov 26, 2016 0 0

Do you love to go on hikes or camping trips, but hate when the weather tries to slow you down? Weather can certainly ruin a number of outdoor plans, but it does not have to ruin a great hiking or camping event. Investing in quality outerwear can make all the difference when battling the elements during your outdoor fun.

There are many different types of raincoats available on the market today. Before making a purchase, it is important to know what you are looking for. For what types of activities will you be using the raincoat? Will you be outside in the elements for short trips or for more extended periods of time? Obviously, the most important factor to consider when purchasing a raincoat is the level of waterproofing it possesses.

There are two main factors to consider when analyzing how waterproof a rain jacket is absorption and penetration. Absorption deals with how much water the fabric can soak up, while penetration considers the amount of water that can sink in to the fabric. Quality raincoat fabrics are always one of the two. How should a person determine what type of raincoat is the best for them?

The best quality raincoats are made of tightly woven fabric. This helps prevent water from seeping through the

material while still allowing the skin to breathe and release moisture. The tightly woven fabric will stop water from penetrating the skin layer of the jacket. To be even more thorough, try to purchase a raincoat that also has an inner liner made from a water-repelling fabric. Should the water penetrate the top layer, you will still have a layer of defence. Fabrics that absorb water do not make for good raincoats. The coat will get wet and heavy, and it will be unable to maintain body temperature. Polyester is an effective fabric for a coat as it is waterproof, but also allows the skin to breathe by wicking moisture away from the skin, but not allowing outside moisture to penetrate to skin level.

When purchasing outerwear, first consider for what type of activity you will be using the coat. If you will be spending a great deal of time in outdoors dealing with weather, be sure to purchase a fully waterproof coat that repels water from the outside, but soaks it up from the inside. The right rain coat will protect you on all your outdoor adventures.
