If you're a regular drinker, you have probably experienced the effect of drinking too much alcohol on your body the next morning.

You might have a big headache, a dry mouth, nausea, dizziness, thirst and an urge to swear off alcohol for life...well, until next Friday night anyway. Hangovers are caused by the dehydrating effects of alcohol and a reaction to the chemicals in the drinks. A lot of dark colored drinks make you feel more hungover due to the chemical addictives contained in them - these include red wine, brandy, sherry and port.

How to get rid of a hangover

Have some fructose. Fructose is a sugar which occurs naturally mainly in fruits. The fructose helps your body burn up the remaining alcohol in your body. Drink fruit juice, or water mixed with lemon and honey and your recovery will be speeded up. You can also chew on fruit like an orange for a similar effect but fruit juice will help with dehydration as well.

Try and eat something. I know you might not feel like it, but try and boost your blood sugar levels with some food. A banana is a good choice: easy on the stomach but substantial and nutritious enough.

Drink plenty of fluids. Try to drink a glass of water before you go to bed. Keep a large glass on your bedside table so you can sip on it through the night if you have to. As mentioned, fruit juice is a great choice as well. Skip the tea, coffee and other caffeinated drinks as they will make you feel even more dehydrated and might irritate your stomach too.

Forget about the 'hair of the dog'. "Hair of the dog" is an old English expression used to describe drinking more alcohol when you're already feeling the bad effects of alcohol. This is only going to make you feel worse!

Rest up. Obviously, you're going to need a better excuse for your boss than the fact you are nursing an almightly hangover, but if you can, try to take it easy, and do not drive if you're still feeling the effects of too much alcohol - it is possible that you might still have alcohol in your system.

Take a painkiller. Paracetamol, Ibuprofen and other painkillers will have to clear your throbbing headache. Try to take one before you go to bed in the evening. However, painkillers might make your stomach feel worse.

Take an antiacid for your belly ache. Antiacids usually come in the form of a chewy tablet, soluble tablets you add to water, a fizzy drink or liquid. They relieve indigestion and heartburn by neutralizing the harsh acids in your stomach. Some absorb the excess stomach gas too. If you're taking other medicines, check with your doctor or pharmacist first as some antiacids can effect the absorption of pills and other medicines. Popular anti-acids include Rennie tablets, Setlers Antacid, Maalox Plus, Gaviscon Tables and Phillip's Milk of Magnesia.

Best Hangover Cures: PREVENTION

The best way to avoid a hangover - and you know this already - is to be sensible about your drinking in the first place. Try and alternate between an alcoholic drink and a soft drink, or at the very least, have a weaker alcoholic drink (e.g. ask for double the non-alcoholic mixer part) and your normal drink.

And try to eat a hearty meal before you start drinking to soak up some of that alchohol.
