How To Get Rid Of Bedbugs Using A Hepa Vacuum Cleaner

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

A properly designed hepa vacuum cleaner is the proper tool for removing live or dead bed bugs, bed bug feces and eggs from mattresses, box springs, any other areas where these pests hide. Keep in mind that a bed bug can get into almost any crack that is wide enough to insert a normal credit card.

How Do You Find Bed Bugs?

Removing bed bugs is a multi-step process. While there are a number of methods to treat your home to kill bed bugs and other insects the first step should be removal of as many live and dead insects and their eggs and feces as possible. Although bed bugs are only about 3/16 inches long and flat when hungry you can see they if they are present. Look closely in creases and seams of your mattresses and boxsprings. You can also see stains and other residue that they leave if there is a heavy infestation. Using a flashlight or other hand held light can help you find them.

If you want to keep a close eye on any possible bed bug infestations you can use an inexpensive passive bed bug monitor. The bed bug Alert is a passive monitor meaning that it does not attract bed bugs.

We suggest placing Bed Bug Alert on the bed or a wall close to be bed where it can be visually inspected and not disturbed for a year. Each month mark the calendar on the monitor and inspect for dark spots or skins left behind on the outside white detection area of the monitor. If you see any of these signs you may have bed bugs.

What Is A Hepa Vacuum?

These special machines designed especially for bed bug removal have a special HEPA filter. HEPA is a designation for High-Efficiency Particulate Air which is a type of air filter that must meet certain standards set by the United States Department of Energy. To receive the HEPA designation these filters must remove 99.7% of all particles greater than 0.3 micrometer from any air passing through the filter.

HEPA filters have a wide range of applications in hospitals and other areas where the removal of microscopic particles is necessary to prevent the transmission of a virus or other harmful airborne particulate. A vacuum cleaner that does not incorporate a HEPA filter is a poor choice for bed bug and other insect removal.

The hepa vacuum cleaner is also beneficial for asthma and allergy sufferers. The special filter traps pollen and dust mite feces which can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. A true hepa vacuum cleaner is designed to expel all of the air that it draws in through the HEPA filter and none of this air must be able to leak past the filter.

Some vacuum cleaners which use HEPA or HEPA like filters may not be sealed to prevent the leakage of air. Filtering air through a HEPA filter requires a very powerful motor that units not specially designed may not have.

How Do You Get Bedbugs?

Bed bug infestations are on the rise and no matter how careful you are with your house cleaning chores, bed bugs can always find a way into your home. In apartments and other living areas that are in a common area it is a simple matter for one infected apartment to spread these bugs to all the others.

If you spend any time in motels or hotels you can very easily carry these pests home in your luggage. Your children can bring the insects home in their backpacks or clothing. In my city the library had to be closed for treatment after bed bugs were found there.

Investing in a properly designed hepa vacuum cleaner could be a wise investment not only for helping you combat bed bugs and other insects but it can be a real benefit if you have pets that can leave hair and other deposits around the home.
