A College Degree is Important But Not Always Necessary To Get A Good Job
Getting a good job without a degree can be challenging, but it can be done with just a little extra effort on your part. We are currently in October, 2011, still facing some very serious economic times. Everyone is fighting for good jobs so it is best that you try to stand out from the crowd. Here are a few great tips to help you get a good job even without a college degree.
Volunteer Your Time
Look for a company you'd like to work for and ask them if they have an unpaid volunteering or internship position. Yes, work for free! This seems to be a no-brainer for college students, but for adults who have never gone to college it may not occur to you that volunteering your time is a good way to get a job you really want. This is of course if your time and your schedule permits it. For someone who works nights or is currently unemployed this can be a great option. When you volunteer your time with a company, they get to know you and you get to know them. They get to know your work ethic and you get to see if this company is where you want to be. When it comes time to hire for a vacant position, even though you do not officially work for the company, you are still considered "part of the staff" and an inside applicant. Most companies hire from "within" before they look elsewhere to fill a vacant position. Even if something doesn't become available in that particular department or at that particular job, you still have the experience to put on your resume and you have a bonafide, high quality reference. Take a page out of the college student's book and get an internship/or volunteer.
Take Some Adult Education Classes
In each state there are usually places where adults can go to take classes in just about anything imaginable. The classes are taught by experts in the field. They Adult Ed Classes are usually not associated with a college but it is more of a service to the community. The Adult Education Classes are not the same as "Continuing Education Classes" which are connected to a university or college. To find an Adult Education Class have to type in your state plus "adult education class". They should look something like this Adult Education Class in Massachusetts, The Boston Center For Adult Education. The general idea is that you don't have to enroll in anything, you just pay a small fee and get lessons taught by experts and professionals in the field. This can go on your resume and you'll have this extra knowledge.
Have a Solid and Verifiable Work History
Even if you do not have a college degree, you can get a good job with a solid and verifiable work history. Make sure you keep in contact with your references so that you'll always have current information. Alway do a good job and go the extra mile-believe it or not, it does count a lot when someone is giving you a reference. They always remember a hard worker.
Sign Up With Several Temp Agencies
This is a great way to get a good job even without a college degree. This works similarly to the internship and volunteering except that you get paid. When you work for a temp agency, they send you out on different assignments to complete. Sometimes the job is one day, other times it may be for months or years depending on what the company is looking for. When you apply at the agencies, you usually have one person that you work with and that person knows what you are looking for, knows your experience and educational levels and matches you with the best company fit. When you interview your representative, you can let him know that you are interested in "temp-to-perm" positions. Meaning that she sends you on assignments that are temporary but they are looking for someone to fill that permanent position and if you do a good job-it could be you. Hop around with different companies until you find what you are looking for.
