You want a web site for blogging or to show the merits of your company. You set up a web site. Maybe you have the best of intentions and you want to get the word out. What Are Keywords?

For example, "cats" might be a keyword that pertains to your web site. This would be true if you have a site that discusses pet grooming. There is no doubt that people are often searching for the word "cats". Your web site can have content dedicated to cats. That makes it one of your keywords. After all, your site would be competing with pet breeders, pet food makers and pet owner sites. You can improve this keyword by adding additional relevant words. How Do You Use Keywords?
After you determine which words your target audience might be searching for, (such as the above keywords), you need to establish content that contains the keywords. This can be in the form of pages or posts that include the keyword. A pet grooming site might have an article that discusses the particulars of grooming each of several breeds of cats. Your audience may be searching for such information and they will more easily find you when you write about the keywords. Each time you think of new keywords, you should establish content that includes those keywords. In time, your web site will become much more relevant to people searching for that keyword, and similar ones.
Establish a Niche Using Keywords
You could establish a web site all about one type of pet but there are likely millions of sites on the Internet already that you would have to compete with. Rather than target your web site towards a broad topic, you should narrow the focus. This is done by adding additional words to the primary keywords of the site. When you have narrowed the topic using more words in the relevant keywords, you have established your web site as a niche. For example, a web site that pertains to "grooming tips for long haired cats", is far more specialized than one about "favorite pets". In this case, your potential audience is far smaller than the audience for the broad keyword. Each potential viewer, however, is far more likely to find your web site when they search for the keyword. This means that the performance of your web site is likely better. As well, when your viewers arrive on your site, they are much more likely to interact since your site is going to be very relevant to their needs.
Don't Make Your Niche Too Narrow
You can take keyword targeting too far. Perhaps you have a web site that has content that matches a particularly narrow keyword. You check and find that there are no other web sites on the Internet that pertain to the keyword. While this sounds like a good situation to be in, it could mean that there are no potential viewers. If the search keyword is so obscure that no one ever searches for it, you will not get any viewers. The art of balancing keywords in favor of potential viewers is called "Search Engine Optimization", or "SEO. A great niche that is not too narrow is one that is searched for by a fair number of people each month and that has relatively few web sites that pertain to the keyword. How many searches per month and how many matching web sites are metrics that you have to balance.
Don't Go Keyword Crazy
In the early days of search engines, people found that they could establish an authoritative web site on virtually any topic by repeating keywords over and over. Articles were written that contained dozens of repeating keywords. As you can imagine, these articles were terrible to read. Search engines, however, loved them. Such web sites would have many, many keywords indexed and were ranked highly because the search engines were fooled into believing that such sites were authorities on particular topics. This practice no longer works and is actually detrimental to your web site. Modern search engines look for natural language writing on web sites. That means that keywords should normally be fairly rarely mentioned on a single web page. There is no hard and fast rule but popular belief is that a keyword should not be used more than about 3% of the time on a web page. For example, on a page of 1000 words, an individual keyword could be repeated 25 to 30 times, at most. Staying on the low side is actually better. Imagine reading a web page and seeing the same keyword 30, 35 or 40 times. You would find it un-natural. So do search engines.
So pay attention to keywords that pertain to your web site and try to better target your potential viewers. When you have a number of web pages that have well performing keywords, you will likely find that your viewer statistics increase significantly.
