Search engine optimization is the best way to rank your website higher in search engine rankings. Follow this guide word by word and I guarantee you will see your website start climbing up the search engine result pages.
On Page Optimization 101
Header and Title Tags
You can add meta tags called "description" and "keywords" to each one of your pages if you do not already use one. Do not use the same for every page however since Google will penalize you for duplicating these tags.
The title tag should contain the phrase you are trying to rank for. If you are trying to rank for god training use this title tag:
Dog Training | URL.com
Of course you will want to change the "URL" to your own website's name.
Your description tag should also have the keyword you are targeting inside of it. Google allows up to 160 characters so make sure you make the description count. It is very important to increasing your website's ranking in Google.
H1 Tag and Content
The header title for your page should also contain the keyword you are targeting. It is a three-way attack with the header, description, and title tag.
The content on your page must be relevant to the topic you are ranking for. Only use the keyword 1-2 times for every 500 words you write since you do not want to appear as a spammer. It's also important to note that to rank high for certain terms you may need to write 1000-2000 word articles talking about all the details and facets of your keyword.
Off Site Optimization
Link Building Tactics
Off site optimization is everything you can do to increase your rank without modifying your own site. The most common aspect of off site optimization is building links from different sites.
Commenting - commenting on other blogs that write about your topic is not only a good way to build links but is also great for networking.
Guest posting - once you build a relationship with the bloggers in your niche they may give you permission to publish content on their blog. This may sound like a bad idea but it is a good way to introduce your site to their readership and get some links. Totally worth it.
Cold emailing - one thing that I do fairly often is just email website owners and ask for a link from their links page. Send a simple email that introduces your site and tell the owner of the other site why it makes sense for them to add your link to their page. About 1 out of every 2 emails usually ends with a link and the start of a relationship.
Social media - social media is another way to get links. Make sure you put your URL on all your different social media accounts. I recommend that you do not spam your website address to your following however.
Directory posting - there are lots of different web directories on the internet. Submit your site to the open directory project as well as other directories that are inside your topic. These links are not very powerful but are better than having zero links.
Forum Signature - If you are active on a forum than put your link inside your signature. It will show up under all your posts. These links are not worth too much but are a good way of diversifying the links to your site. Also list your URL on your forum profile.
Use these tips for search engine optimization and I promise that your website will start to rank higher in search engines. Good luck!
