Have you ever seen amazing desktop effects in Ubuntu. Have you ever seen them at all? Well if you have then you know that you need a pretty fast computer to run Compiz in Ubuntu. Well it is you lucky day, now you can have the amazing desktop effects without sacrificing speed. In this tutorial I will show you step by step what you need to do to get up and running with Compiz.

Things You Will Need

Here is what you will need:
-Xubuntu installed on a computer or laptop.
-An Internet connection
-About 10-20 minutes of time
-And friends to stare and awe

Step 1

First off we will need to use the terminal. I know that a great deal of people tend to stay away from the terminal, but follow the instructions closely and you will be fine.

1.Open up the terminal by going to Application>Accessories>Terminal.
2.Copy and paste the following into the terminal and press Enter.

sudo apt-get install compiz-core compiz-plugins compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-fusion-plugins-extra emerald compizconfig-settings-manager

3.When prompted type in your password.
4.When it asks if you would like to install press Y.

Once it is done downloading and installing it will tell you it's finished. But we can't use it just yet.

Step 2

Next we need to configure Compiz before we can use it.

First go to Applications>Settings>Compiz Config Settings Manager
There are two main effects that people use. The first is the 3D Cube, The second is Wobbly Windows. I will show you how to enable the cube first.

1.In the settings manager goto General Options near the top middle of the window.
2.Next click the tab that says Desktop Size
3.Change Horizontal Virtual Size to 4, Vertical Virtual Size to 1, And Number of Desktops to 1.
4.Now on the left hand side click desktop.
5.Now make sure to check the boxes next to Desktop Cube and Rotate Cube.
6.Click on the Rotate Cube button.
7.Change the bottom slider labeled zoom to 1.

The Wobbly Windows is much easier to enable.
1.On the left hand side click effects.
2.Then check mark the box that says Wobbly Windows.
3.If a window comes up saying there is a conflict, push "Enable Wobbly Windows"

That is all for configuring, Next step I'll show you how to get it running.

Step 3

Now that you have it all installed and configured, all you need now is to run it. This part of the tutorial is the simplest.

1.Press Alt+F2.
2.In the box type in.

compiz --replace

3.Then click run.
That's it! All it took was a little determination, some time, and friends to stare at awe :)

I Hope you enjoyed my tutorial and use Compiz for good and not evil :)
