How To Install Metal Roofing Sheets
Out of all of the different styles of roofing one of the more difficult types to install is sheet metal roofing. A great deal of care must be taken throughout this process to ensure a water tight seal as well as to keep from damaging the delicate surface. Metal roofing sheets just has a layer of paint on top of it and the paint can easily be scratched off if not managed properly. There are a number of techniques that must be used when installing this type of roofing.
The first thing is to make sure you have an vapor barrier such as tar paper installed before putting the metal roofing sheets on. The next step is to start putting the roofing on. Lay the first piece on the roof so that it is perfectly square. Then screw down the edge with special metal roofing screws. These screws are only around an inch long and have a padding that will keep the screws from scratching the paint and they create a water tight seal.
After the first panel is down very carefully lift the next one over the first and line up the grooves. Screw down the grooves that have been set together. Then repeat this process until all of the panels have been locked down. Move to the other side of the roof and do the same thing.
After all of the panels have been locked down, it is time to seal the roof up with the drip edge. Drip edge has to be around all of the edges of the roof. To install it just lay it on and screw it down. There also has to be a piece covering the peak. You just place the piece over the top and screw it down. Sometimes the piece will have to be folded but often it comes ready to go over the roof.
When the roof is completely installed, it is important to sweep all of the metal shavings off the roof. If any of the shavings are left there, they will rust and leave large stains on the panels.
A great deal of care has to be taken when installing each of the panels on the roof. The edges of the panels are sharp and can scratch the paint off one another very easily. If you drag a panel along another one there will be a large scratch down the surface of the whole thing. These scratches can be unsightly and make the job look poor.
If your sheet metal roofing installed properly, they will last a long time and look nice for the duration of their lives.
