Before you begin cutting holes in your ceiling, take a look at examples of the lighting. Do any friends or neighbors have recessed lighting? You should probably check out a lighting showroom near where you are to compare various forms.

Once you have chosen your style and the canisters you want, you need to make sure you have enough space for them. It’s easiest if you have an attic or crawlspace above the place where your recessed lights are going.

Now you’ve got to decide where you are going to place the lights in the room. A distance of between five and eight feet is best. When choosing you locations you want to make sure that you avoid putting your lights in places where the studs are. You can use a stud finder to do this, or else drill a small hole in the ceiling and feeling around with a hanger. Also look at it from the attic space, assuming that is accessible.

Before cutting the holes for the canisters in you ceiling you should probably remove or cover your furniture, as this can be dusty. Use the template that came with your lights to draw your pattern, then cut out the circles.

TURN OFF ALL POWER to the circuit you are working on, at the breaker box, to prevent any injuries. Run wire from the nearest junction box, to the nearest light. Wire should be connected black-to-black, white-to-white (red-to-red) and ground-to-ground (either green or bare copper) to the wires are the junction box. Be sure that you are using wire of the correct gauge and length. Wire ought to be attached with wire caps.

For attaching the wires to your light canisters you should follow the manufacturers instructions. Different companies use slightly different designs. If you attach them incorrectly it could cause you lights not to work, or in more extreme cases, cause fire. From that light you then run your wires to the rest of the lights. Be sure before installing the recessed lights that they will not take enough power to overload the circuit.

To put the lights in place, you just push or pull them into the ceiling. To make things more secure, you ought to secure them to the ceiling joists using screws or nails. Certain types of canisters are not meant to connect to the beams. Those should be fine just positioned in the ceiling.

Now just pop the rims on, and install a lightbulb. After turning back on your power, you should be able to use your lights. Enjoy your new, modern lighting
