How To Do Keyword Research

By Edited Dec 14, 2014 1 1

Getting Started

Getting started creating niche sites can be a daunting task. As any expert who makes money building niche websites will tell you, the most important part of the process is keyword research. Learning how to pick the right words or phrases will play a huge role in determining if your websites will make money. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you on your journey.

Step 1

While this may seem obvious, people beginning to create their own niche sites often forget one thing when thinking of ideas. They forget they will need to create content based on their ideas. To find a keyword that will be suitable to your needs, you need to look for a keyword you can write about. A good rule of thumb would be to ask yourself the question, could I write 50 posts on this topic?

Step 2

Generate List of Words From Your Ideas

Finding a word that is profitable is about finding a niche within a niche. For example, it will most likely be impossible to rank for the keyword "dog". However, it may be possible to rank for something like "terrier leashes" or "training golden retrievers". One important thing to note is that your niche needs to get enough searches to be profitable. If only 100 people are searching your keywords per month, monetization will be very difficult, if not impossible. There is plenty of free software out there for this purpose including Google's own Adwords. There is also paid software such as Longtail Pro.

Step 3

Analyzing Your Competitors

To put it simply, you have to do it better than your competitors. You can have a passion for a keyword and it can meet a lot of good criteria, but if you can't beat the content your competitors (the first page of google) are putting out, it is a lost cause. The goal is to get a keyword that you can rank in the top 10 of google. If you can do this you can be on your way to a profitable niche site.

Step 4

Is there A Money Market?

You may find a keyword that looks great based upon the aforementioned criteria, but can you monetize this keyword? Are there products out there for your niche that are people are willing to buy, or can you create such a product? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, then you are well on your way!

This may seem like a lot of work, and there is no doubt that is true! Keyword research will make or break your websites. Many people fail to understand this as being the most important part of building your own niche site. However, without a doubt, there is nothing more important to your success.
