Learn How To Improve A 50cc Scooter's Acceleration And Top Speed

When it comes to learning how to make a 50cc scooter go faster, there's a lot to consider. Even though your scooter or moped has a small motor, it is still designed to achieve a certain level of performance. 50cc scooters are typically restricted to a certain speed and the devices used to restrict the top speed will limit your scooters acceleration as well.

How To Make A 50cc Scooter Faster

Can my little bike go faster?

Yes, it definitely can. Now I'm sure that since you bought a small bike and not a motorcycle that your primary concern was likely economy and not speed. I know from experience however that riding a stock 49cc moped can leave you wanting some more power. There is a lot that you can do to squeeze more power out of that little engine and get it up to it's full potential.

How hard is it make my 50cc bike go faster?

Modifications to increase your scooters speed range from very simple to quite complicated and not for the beginner. It is possible to upgrade your scooter at home in your driveway. For the less bold however, I would recommend seeking out a scooter or motorcycle shop in your area and having them do the work for you. For the do-it-yourselfer there are lots of resources available including YouTube videos and online how to's.

What are my options?

It depends on what your goals are. There are a few things you can do to get your scooter or moped up to it's full potential. Start with the first and simplest, and work your way down the list as you find yourself wanting more power.

1. Give your bike a tune-up

Over time, spark plugs can get fouled, air filters get dirty and carburetor jets can become plugged. If you're not the first owner you may not know what the moped was like new but are not impressed by the performance. Consider having a motorcycle mechanic check it over and make sure it's running as it did when it was new.

2. Derestrict the variator and exhaust

This is simple and can be done by somebody with minimal mechanical skill at home. It takes about an hour and should net you gains for 5-8kph top speed and slightly better acceleration. It's a modest improvement but more than good enough for something that's free.

3. Replace variator, clutch springs and exhaust pipe

Also called a "stage 1" upgrade, this will net you 8-10k higher top speed and dramatically improved acceleration. When you install these parts you will have to "re-jet" your carburetor to make up for the increased air flow. This is fairly simple to do if you're mechanically inclined. There are a wide variety of exhaust and variator options available online so make sure you do your research before purchasing a kit. This can be installed with no experience but I would seek help from somebody who has done it before. When addressing how to make your 50cc scooter go faster this is the first step that will net you dramatic speed gains.

4. Upgrade motor cylinder, carbuerator and clutch

Installing these performance parts will net you an additional 8-10k top speed and lightning fast acceleration. This installation however, is far more difficult to do and requires tuning the carb which is quite difficult. Unless you have experience working on scooters or mopeds I would let a professional do this one. Installing the parts is again, not that complex but the tuning can be quite difficult and if not done correctly, can ruin your motor.

5. Install racing parts

If you are crazy about performance, and want your scooter to be able to beat a motorcycle off the line, you want to check out scooter racing parts. There's no better way to make a 49cc scooter faster than this. Available from several online stores, these parts will get your front wheel off the ground and can get you cruising at over 100kph. Everything from racing engines, fully tuned racing transmissions, clutches, carbs and exhaust. These parts are not cheap however and if you want your scooter to have the top level of performance it will need to be installed by a professional. I can assure you though, there's no better feeling than watching the look on your friend's faces when you burn down the street doing a wheelie on your racing scooter.

How to make a 50cc scooter faster depends on what you want out of your bike. For the best combination of performance and reliability, I would go with #4, professionally installed. Sometimes, if you buy the parts through the motorcycle shop you can even get a warranty on these aftermarket parts making the whole upgrade a lot safer. If something goes wrong, just bring it back to the shop and let them deal with it!
