How To Make Dried Apple Face Dolls

Dried apple face dolls make a really cute decoration for fall. They are a great family crafts project. Dried apple face dolls are a great way to use a surplus of apples or get rid of the ones that are on the verge of going bad. These make really cute old world type dolls. The best part is you won't need any expensive doll making supplies to make your doll. This will quickly become a family of collectable dolls.

Things You Will Need

Apple

Peeler

craft knife

permanent markers

yarn, spray varnish

straight pins

small beads

glass bottle

fabric

Step 1

Peel your apple.

Step 2

Use a small craft knife such as an X-Acto knife to an "A" shape where you would want the nose on the face to be. Use your craft knife to scrape the apple on either side of the "A" so the nose begins to stick out and off the face.

Step 3

Use your craft knife to etch out a mouth. The mouth can be a thick line straight across, upturned, down turned, a thick zig zag line or an "O" shape. Use your imagination for the mouth shape.

Step 4

Make small shallow holes for the eyes. The eyes can be small circles, ovals or slits.

Step 5

Take a glass bead in the color of your choice, place the bead on the end of a straight pin and one into each eye hole.

Step 6

On each side of the face, carve small or large "C" shapes for the ears. Scrape out some of the apple on the curve of the "C".

Step 7

Place the apple on a sheet of wax paper and keep it in a warm dry place. It will take 2 to 3 weeks for the apple head to dry. The apple heads can be placed in an oven on its lowest temperature setting to speed the drying process. Be sure to keep an eye on the apple if it's in the oven to make sure it doesn't burn, A convection oven it best for this. Your apple will wrinkle as it dries to give the appearance of an old wrinkly face.

Step 8

After your apple heads have dried, spray them on all sides with spray varnish. Allow the varnish to dry completely.

Step 9

Glue yarn or cotton batting to the top and sides of the head for hair.

Step 10

Use a permanent marker to color lips red and light pink to give the cheeks a flushed look.

Step 11

Place craft glue on the top rim of an old glass soda bottle or beer bottle. Place the dried apple face on top. Allow the glue to dry.

Step 12

Wrap a fabric scrap around the bottle for her dress and secure in place with craft glue.

Step 13

Buy a doll body and attach the head to a doll body. Doll bodies are available at craft stores and anywhere doll craft supplies are sold. Buy doll clothes from a craft store or toy store to dress your dried apple face doll.

Step 14

You can just use the heads as they are without bodies.

Have fun dressing up your dried apple faced doll. Use your imagination to style her hair and apply make-up. Maybe even add a beard and make your a doll a man. Color the face green for a scary witch. There is no right or wrong way to create your doll.
