By Edited Apr 7, 2016 1 1

Many people buy and use antibacterial mouth-wash once a day sometimes two or three times per day. Antibacterial mouth-wash helps prevent gum disease, kills germs that lead to bad breath and in general keep your mouth clean and healthy. Using store bought mouth-wash several times a day can get expensive. In a tough economy or even if the economy is not so tough, there is a certain satisfaction to making something yourself and saving money in the process. Homemade mouth-wash allows you to know exactly what is in the wash you are swishing around your teeth and mouth and helps to save money on dental care. Homemade antibacterial mouth-wash is just as effective as the mouth-wash you buy in the store, only much less expensive.

You Will Need:

Lidded glass jar

Lemon essential oil

Bergamot essential oil

Distilled water

Add water to a pot on the stove and bring it to a boil. Shut the flame off from under the pot and place a 12 to 16 ounce glass jar into the water. Let it sit in the water for 10 to 15 minutes to sterilize the jar. Remove the jar from the hot water with tongs to avoid burning yourself. Set the jar on a clean towel to dry. Let the jar cool to room temperature.

Pour 4 ounces of vodka into the jar; brand name vodka is not necessary, buy whatever is the cheapest, off brands are fine and just as effective. Add 1/4 teaspoon of lemon essential oil, 1/8 teaspoon of bergamot essential oil and 8 ounces of distilled water.

Place the lid on the jar and shake it to mix the vodka, essential oils and distilled water. Always shake the ingredients to mix before each use because they will separate.

Before using: Measure 1/2 ounce, which is approximately 1 tablespoon of mouth-wash and add it to 2 ounces of water.

Swish the mouth-wash around your mouth and between your teeth just like store bought mouth-wash. keep the mouth-wash moving around your mouth for about a minute or so. Sing Happy Birthday or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in your head, when you are finished singing the song, spit the mouth-wash out. Always spit the mouth-wash out into sink. Do not drink the mouth-wash or swallow it.

Place a label on the jar of concentrated antibacterial mouth-wash with all ingredients clearly listed.

Store the anti-bacterial mouth-wash out of a child's reach. Do not allow children to use this mouth-wash because of the alcohol content. If you are currently taking any prescribed or over the counter medications consult your healthcare professional or local pharmacist before using the  mouth-wash to determine if it will interact with your medications.

Always shake before using to remix the ingredients.

Essential oils can be found online or in health food stores. Choose good quality essential oils for best results.

Brush you teeth at least twice daily or after each meal and snack. Use the antibacterial mouth-wash after each brushing.

A good oral hygiene routine will keep teeth and gums healthy.

Using antibacterial mouth-wash is not a replacement for regular dental cleanings and visits.

Good oral hygiene promotes good health. Those with gum disease, cavities and rotting teeth are more susceptible to heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.
