Tips To Stay Healthy
One of the first tips to stay healthy is not known by many people. Working out can help you avoid getting sick. Studies have shown that working out(whether it be cardio or resistance training) boosts your immune system and helps your body fight off sickness. One important thing to remember at the gym(and this will be covered later as well) is to use hand sanitizer when available(many gyms have it near the equipment). Although the health benefits of working out can boost your immune system, gyms are also filled germs on the equipment, so use hand sanitizer and try to avoid touching your eyes or nose until you have thoroughly sanitized your hands after your workout.
Another one of the ways to stay healthy is to avoid sick people(whenever possible) when you are out with friends drinking. Drinking alcohol and heading out to the bars with your friends can certainly be a fun diversion on a Friday or Saturday night, but it can also get you sick.
Drinking alcohol lowers your immune system's ability to fend off illness. So when you are out at a bar or a party with friends keep as far away as possible from anyone who sounds sick or starts coughing. This sometimes can be easier said than done, but if you notice someone who is obviously sick try and stay as far away from them as possible while the alcohol is in your system and lower your immune system's ability to protect you. Another option is to just limit your alcohol intake during the cold and flu season as much as possible.
Water is a key part of helping you to stay healthy, but it can also play a key role in preventing you from getting sick. Water is what transports vitamins and nutrients to the cells in your body, so by making sure you stay hydrated you will keep your immune system in the best shape possible by assuring that all the vital nutrients it needs to operate efficiently are being delivered.
If you would like to stay healthy then avoid touching your face until you have either washed your hands or sanitized them using hand sanitizer. Wiping your eyes or licking your fingers are both ways for germs to enter your body and make you sick. If you consciously make an effort to wash up before doing any of these things you will greatly help in reducing your chances of getting sick.
You have to be careful when you are trying to get rid of germs though. If you wash your hands you must scrub your hands with soap for at least 15 seconds and run your hands under warm water to kill all the germs that may be there.
One very important tip to stay healthy: Never use the hand dryers in restaurants or bars. Many times these machines that blow hot air onto your hands are never cleaned and the filters are not replaced, meaning you are just blowing germs, dust, and many other things onto your hands, totally defeating the purpose of washing your hands at all. Always use paper towels instead, and if there are no paper towels dry your hands on your clothes.
Hand sanitizers are another convenient way to keep germs off your hands. Make sure you buy a sanitizer that has at least 70% Ethyl alcohol however, anything less than that may not be strong enough to kill all germs. Hand sanitizers are excellent when you are touching things many other people are touching such as when you go to the gym, use a keyboard other people are using, or touching something like the microwave at your office that other people use. Studies do show that hand sanitizers are indeed effective, but washing your hands with soap and warm water for at least 15 seconds is still the most effective method of removing germs from your hands.
The last and one of the most important tips to stay healthy is to get at least 6 hours of sleep every night. Studies have repeatedly shown that people who get 6 hours or more of sleep at night tend to get sick less than people who are sleep deprived. When the cold and flu season comes make sure you schedule enough time for a good nights sleep, your immune system will thank you in the morning.
There are ways to stay healthy which can greatly increase your chances of avoiding sickness. The steps listed above will go along way in greatly increasing your chances to stay healthy. Wash your hands, don't touch your face, work out, and get a good night's sleep and you will have as good a chance as anyone at avoiding illness.
