Millions of cars are being driven around the world everyday. From all walks of life, young and old, male or female, thousands of people use automobiles to get from one place to another. You can hear the sound of cars and trucks day and night if you live in the city, and in rural areas. With the sheer number of people driving everyday, accidents and mishaps do happen. And one of the common causes of these accidents is drowsy driving. However, you shouldn't fret and feel anxious if you are a driver because there are ways that you can do in order to prevent being drowsy while you are driving.

Follow these simple tips on how to prevent drowsy driving in order to safeguard your life and the lives of your loved ones from accidents and untoward incidents: 

1) Get plenty of sleep

Safe driving is all about focus. If you don't have enough sleep the night before you drive your automobile for long distances, there's a possibility that you will feel drowsy while driving after a few minutes or after an hour. Taking plenty of sleep the night before will help you maintain your focus in driving.

2) Take someone with you

If you are prone to getting sleepy when driving, perhaps you should take someone with you, especially when driving long distances. You can either bring your child or your wife with you or some other person when travelling. Having someone as a passenger will let you have a conversation with the person during the long trip. Talking on different topics will get you preoccupied with the conversation and will prevent you from getting drowsy.

3) Munch some junk foods or candies 

Munching candy or eating some junk food will help you stay awake while driving on the road because you will be preoccupied with the munching and chewing of the food that you are eating. However, be warned that you don't do this excessively as you might lose your focus in driving on the road.

4) Schedule a break in your driving

Because driving is sometimes purely a monotonous activity, you will likely get lethargic eventually. To prevent this you should make an schedule when to rest. Perhaps you should take a quick nap after an hour of driving or every after 100 miles of road travelled. All you have to do is park by the side of the road, turn on your hazard lights and take a quick nap of about 15 or 20 minutes.

5) Drink coffee or a caffeinated drink

Drinking coffee before driving for long hours is an effective way to prevent drowsiness while driving. An alternative to this is by drinking caffeinated drinks on occassion while driving. The caffeine mixed with the drink helps you become alert and maintain focus while driving.

Statistics tell us that drowsy driving claims thousands of lives every year and causes more than a hundred thousand accidents each year. That is why preventing drowsy driving is a serious business. Every human life is important. If you are the one driving a car and your family and relatives are riding with you, you can follow the simple steps mentioned above in order to prevent being drowsy while driving. Each one of us should be responsible drivers in order to safeguard and respect the lives of other drivers and their passengers also.

Really important advice, falling asleep at the wheel is the cause of so many accidents. In the UK you often see signs at the side of motorways: 'TIREDNESS KILLS - TAKE A BREAK'.
