You can have your e-book published in minutes and see where it takes you. But first, you have to decide where to take your creation. One of the most popular options today would be Amazon store.

Amazon: Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)

Kindle is considered to be a best e-book reading wireless device according to Consumer’s Report. With millions of titles available from the Kindle store, Amazon is responsible for more than 70% of all e-book sales. But Amazon hasn’t stopped there. Now you can download Kindle apps for iPad, iPhone, PC, Mac, Blackberry and Android, which makes your e-book even more available. You also can publish books in German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, and sell your e-book all over the world.

You start by going to www.kdp.amazon.com. Create your account, press “Getting started”, and you are in business. Publishing your book takes minutes, it is free and very easy. Kindle stores require professionally formatted, easy to read books, otherwise they can be removed from the store. You can download KindleGen, Kindle Plugin for Adobe InDesign, or Kindle Previewer applications, which can help you to format and preview your creation prior to publishing. KDP accepts most of the formats, including: .doc, .docx, .epub, .pdf, .rtf, .mobi, .zip, .htm,  and .html.

KDP allows you to price your own books from $0.99 up to $200 depending on size of your book. You can choose 70% royalty option, if your price is between $2.99 and $9.99, and your e-book is sold in Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Switzerland, United Kingdom and USA. Otherwise, KDP pays you 35% royalty. You can’t choose 70% royalty option if your e-book consists primarily public domain information.

If you want to sell your e-book from your own website or through another e-book publisher, you have to make sure that your price on Amazon is at least 20% less than anywhere else. KDP reserves the right to discount your book. Amazon also provides digital rights management (DRM), which can protect your e-book from piracy, but it can create the problem for your readers if they want to convert the book in a different format.

Your e-book can be published next day if you are in US; it can take 2 to 3 days if you are in Europe. Amazon will star to promote your book right away. You can help to market your book by creating a good cover, writing a great description, promoting your book though blogs and social media. You start seeing money after 6 weeks; Amazon deposits your earnings directly to your bank account every month. You can see the sales numbers by going to your account on KDP.

Amazon also gives you the option to print your book with Createspace.com. A lot of people, including me, still prefer printed version. If you realize that your e-book is selling well, this could be a good opportunity to self-publish in print for a low cost.
