How To Replace a Humidifier Filter

A humidifier replacement filter is easy to install. New models are becoming more and more user friendly so the entire process of taking apart and reassembling the unit is pretty straight forward. Changing the filter is usually a good time to also perform some general cleaning.

The time to change is filter depends on the frequency of usage. It is time to change the filter when there is visible dust build up. Otherwise, the filter should be replaced at least every year in case there might be bacteria or mold spores that can't be seen.

Before beginning the disassembly, ensure that the power cord is unplugged. Once the power is disconnected from the source begin by removing and emptying the water reservoir. Refill the tank with fresh cold water and disinfect with a tablespoon of bleach to kill any mold or bacteria that might have developed. Allow the bleach-water solution to sit for 20 minutes.

In the meantime, proceed to the next step and remove the housing cover of the motor. This is usually a large part of the top of the unit. Use this opportunity to clean any dust that might have accumulated. This is the most disassembling that can be done without voiding the manufacturer warranty.

Now we can remove the filter from the humidifier. Some brands are made so that the filter can be washed and reused. However, replacement filters tend to be very inexpensive to it is recommended that filtered be changed so it can be sure that the filters are new and clean. For those who choose to reuse a filter, it is important not to wring or squeeze it dry or risk tearing the filter.

The humidifier should be reassembled just as easily as it was taken apart. Just remember where everything was taken from and put the parts back in place. But before that, take this opportunity to clean the base with a cup of white vinegar. Allow the vinegar to sit for 20 minutes before rinsing with the bleach water from the water tank. Ensure that everything is rinsed clean of all chemicals.

Changing the humidifier filter regularly is the best of ensuring optimal results when the unit is used. Those who wish to avoid the maintenance of humidifier filter cleaning can opt for a filter free humidifier.
