Coupon Tips For Beginners

In this economy, most people are trying to save as much money as they can.  You probably saw the show Extreme Couponing on TLC or heard about someone who is able to save money by couponing.  The recent interest in couponing has led to an increase in the number of coupons that are printed.

Did you know that you can do that too? Seriously, you can learn how to save money by couponing.  No, you do not have to extreme coupon.  You do not need to become someone who spends every day and night clipping coupons.  You can save money by couponing if you do the following things:

Research The Regular Prices

If there are items that you buy on a regular basis, you should make sure that you know the regular price of that item.  Take the time to write the prices of items that you buy.  If you do this for a few months, you will know when an item is a great price.

Get A Newspaper

Make sure that you get a newspaper every week. If you do not want to wait and know that an item will go on sale, you should look into getting coupons online.  Also, if you know that there is a particular item that you want to buy, you could order multiple copies of that coupon from a coupon clipping service.

Read Local Coupon Blogs

The popularity of coupons has led to a lot of bloggers writing about coupon deals in their city.  Since prices and coupons can vary based on location, one of the quickest ways to learn about deals is to follow in someone else’s footsteps.

Use The Internet

If you are like most consumers, you probably buy certain brands.  Those brands often have special deals for those that subscribe to their newsletter or like them on Facebook.  Some brands will even send you coupons in the mail if you give them your address.

Organize the Coupons That You Get

If you fail to organize your coupons, they will not help you save money.  There are many different ways to organize your coupons.  Two of the most popular ways are using a coupon caddy and using a coupon binder.

 Coupon Caddy

Most people should start with a coupon caddy.  They are very compact and are already labeled. After you purchase a coupon caddy, you will simply place the clipped coupons into the various categories on the caddy. You can get a cheap one at your local dollar store.

Coupon Binder

If you know anyone who coupons on a regular basis, you have probably seen their coupon binders.  These binders look great but they should only be used if you have a lot of coupons and if you have the time to devote to maintaining them.  It takes a minimum of six to eight hours per week to maintain the binder.  If you do not have that kind of time to devote to the binder, then it probably is not worth you getting one.

Focus On A Store

When you start couponing you should really focus on one store at a time.  Take the time to learn the coupon policy at that store and the average prices of items at that store.  After you have mastered that store, then you should look at getting deals in another store.  If you follow this method, you will learn to coupon at a faster rate.

Sign Up For Loyalty Cards

Most stores have a loyalty card that will allow you to save money when you use it.  This loyalty card can help you save a lot of money as a couponer.  Additionally, some stores will also provide coupons on their website that can be added to your loyalty card.  Before you go to the store, you should check the website to see if any coupons are available.  You should also take the time to understand the store’s policy for digital coupons (some stores will not allow you to use coupons stored on your card with other coupons).

Make A List

Like most people, you probably make a shopping list before you go to the store.  However, when you use coupons, you need to make a master deal list to make sure that you get everything that you need.  When you begin couponing, this will take some time to create but it is your lifesaver when you are in the store.  Your list should include the name of the item, the size of the item, the number of the item that you are going to get, the coupons that you plan to use, and the price that you expect to get the item for.  Take a pencil to cross off each item when place it into your cart.

Buy Only If…

Beginning couponers often do not save money when they coupon because they start buying items that they do not need.  The whole point of couponing is to save money.  Make sure that you do not go overboard and buy items that you do not need just because you have a coupon. Remember, it is not a deal if it goes to waste.

Don’t Add Pressure

When you begin couponing, you want to make sure that you shop during a time that you will not feel too much pressure.  The best time to shop in a grocery store is usually in the early morning or before people get off of work.  Weekdays are usually better than the weekend.

You should also shop at a time when a store is not busy so that you have time to check the price of each item as it scans.  If you have a problem with a coupon or a price, you will be able to get the help of a manager without causing problems for other shoppers.

Get Others Involved

Saving money does not have to be a task that you do alone.  You should invite your friends to coupon with you or join a group.

Learning to save money by couponing is not too difficult and can even be accomplished by those with limited time.  Once you have mastered the basics, you should consider learning to coupon as an extreme couponer.
