How To Stop Being Taken Advantage Of

It can be challenging to stop friends from taking advantage of us during our day to day activities. We live in a fast paced, and often selfish world. Everyone has high expectations, and thoughts and expectations of how others should behave. This can apply to your personal or professional life, and can be difficult to cope with. It can even reach a point where you find yourself living for everyone else, instead of yourself. Sometimes, these demands can become overwhelming, and usually, by the time you feel overwhelmed, you are already being taken advantage of. This article will give you some insight on how to stop friends from taking advantage of you, especially if it is beginning to have a negative impact on your life.

One of the first things that you need to learn to stop the taking advantage cycle is to learn to say no. It sounds simple enough, but it can be hard to say no, especially when it's a friend asking you to help them. Saying no is often perceived as a sign of weakness, a signal that says that you can't handle it all. That's okay. We should not be expected to be superheroes, despite what others around us might say. And interestingly enough, the ones who hold us to the highest standards are often incapable of upholding this standard themselves!  If you feel that you should decline a task or favor that is being asked of you, say no- and mean it. When you realize that declining an offer will help simplify your life, or alleviate stress, it will become easier. There are plenty of polite ways to say no, practice them, and use them. If your friend gets angry at you, you may need to reevaluate the relationship. A true friend won't overwhelm another with selfish requests. A true friend understands that sometimes, it's just too much.

Remember to be true to yourself. This is something that we so often overlook, especially when times get busy or challenging. Being true to yourself means being loyal to yourself, your needs, and respecting yourself. Put yourself first. Be sure that no task gets in the way of taking care of yourself: your diet, your personal care, and especially your personal well being. Don't sacrifice these basic human needs for anyone. When you get to a point where you are sacrificing yourself, you will see that you cannot be effective doing anything else, including meeting unrealistic demands.

Confide in your friends and family who are not part of the demands that are being made upon you, and seek their feedback. Often, it is easier to tell when you are being taken advantage of from the outside, when you are not being affected by it all. People on the outside can tell if you are being taken advantage of quicker than the person who is directly involved, so heed their advice, and listen to their feedback. Also, don't ever forget that if needed, in order to stop friends from taking advantage of you, it may be necessary to terminate the friendship completely.
