How To Stop Yourself From Falling Asleep in School

We have all had times when we couldn’t help but almost fall asleep in class after a long night.  You sometimes fall asleep for a few seconds without even noticing until you snap out of it.  This may seem a little scary, because nobody wants to have to go through the embarrassment of falling asleep or even worse, snoring during class.  The easiest solution to this problem is to always get at least eight hours of sleep each night, but we all know that is not always possible.  Here are a few tips to help you stay awake during class.

1) Bring Water - Coffee may wake you up for a few periods, but when you’re in your afternoon classes, you will feel just as tired as you were before, if not more.  Also, I do not recommend drinking energy drinks, as they can have side effects, and are just not good for your body.  Instead, bring a large bottle of water with you to school.  Drinking water will keep you up and will also make you have to urinate more, and we all know how hard it is to fall asleep when you have to go to the bathroom!

 2) Go “Get a Drink” - If you are feeling really tired, ask your teacher if you can go get a drink or go to the bathroom.  If they let you go, head over to the nearest water fountain and splash some water on your face.  Also, if you have time, walk around a bit in the halls to get your blood moving.  It will wake you up enough to hopefully get you through to your next class.

3) Find Something To Do - If you are working on an assignment during class it will be harder to fall asleep.  If your teacher is giving a lecture, or even worse if you’re watching a movie with the lights out it will be harder to keep focused and awake.  You need to find something to keep your attention fast or else you risk accidentally nodding off!  Take out a piece of paper and take some really good notes.  Don’t stop, just keep writing about what you are learning.  It may be boring, but it will make you focus a little more and will make your teacher happy!

4) See the School Nurse - Always use this one as a last resort, because if you use it too often, they might accuse you of trying to skip classes.  If you go down to the school nurse and explain your situation to them, they might understand and let you lie down for a period and take a short nap if the nurses office has a bed or couch that is not being used.  Always make sure to thank them afterwords!

Hopefully, these tips will help you make it through the school day next time you barely get any sleep.  The most important thing to remember is to get to bed early as often as possible and not make it a habit.  Not only will getting more sleep improve your health, but it will also help you get better grades at school because you will be able to pay attention better!
