If you are low on space on your Mac computer and need to save a few gigabytes, a good option would be to leave iLife out of your installation.

Things You Will Need

* An Apple Macintosh computer running Mac OS X
* A legal OS restore disk or retail disk of Mac OS X

Step 1

**Back up all of your data first!**

This How-To will detail steps for a CLEAN installation of the Mac OS without iLife. All data on the hard drive will be destroyed.

Step 2

Insert your legal Mac OSX restore disk that came with your computer. If you have two disks, insert Disk 1.

Step 3

Reboot your computer. Make sure the computer boots up using the disk.

Step 4

Choose the language you want to use from the list on your screen.

Step 5

In the "Installer" window that appears click the "Continue" button.

Step 6

The next window will ask you to pick the hard drive to use. The most common default drive will be named "Macintosh HD." You may have other hard drives and/or partitions. So, be sure to double check you are installing in the right place. Click next.

Step 7

The next window will have three buttons at the bottom: "Customize" - "Go Back" - "Install"

Click "Customize."

Step 8

Now you will see a list of items that can be installed.

Uncheck everything except "Essential software."

Click done and then click "Install."

Step 9

Mac OSX will now be installed on your hard drive without iLife or additional language packs. This will save you several GB's of valuable hard drive space.

You can put Disk 2 away. You won't be needing it this time! Array
