How does the eBay feedback system work?

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

The eBay feedback system is quite simply a facility which allows buyers and sellers to rate their experiences with other users. The system allows both a rating (Positive, Neutral or Negative) plus a comment to be made.

When you buy or sell something on eBay, you have the option to leave a feedback comment for the person you transacted with. For example, if you had an overall good experience, you would leave a Positive feedback comment. This would add +1 to the other parties overall feedback rating. A users feedback rating can be seen in the form of a number next to their username, for example, 'eBay_user 345'. If your overall experience was neither good or bad, you could leave a Neutral rating which gives no points and if you had a bad experience, you could leave a Negative rating which would deduct -1 a point from the users feedback rating.

In all cases you can also leave a short comment.

Note that sellers are no longer able to leave negative or neutral feedback comments for buyers.

The eBay feedback system is designed to help people have a better understanding of who they are dealing with online. It helps to build loyal customers and build repeat business. It also serves to warn people of 'problem' eBay users.

As a buyer, you can also rate your buying experience in four other ways – item as described, communication, dispatch time and postage & packing charges. These items are graded on a star rating from 1 to 5 stars, with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent. These star ratings create a sellers Detailed Seller Rating and this rating can be viewed at the top of a sellers feedback profile.

You should always give some thought before leaving a neutral or negative comment as in most cases, eBay will not remove or edit feedback comments. That said, in a small number of situations, for example, if negative feedback were left in error, it is possible to request that eBay remove or edit ratings and/or remarks.

In addition to the feedback rating numerical score, eBay users will also see a star graphic next to their feedback rating. The color of the star changes as more positive feedback comments are generated. The first star you will see is a yellow star which you earn with a rating of 10 points. After that there are an additional 11 stars to earn, up to the current top star, a silver shooting star for a feedback rating of 1,000,000 or more.
